Default Richmond VA ? re pecan pie

After talking to Pattie re Wegmans, bowing down in hosannas to that chain, I have a question for those of you round Richmond. Whenever we drove south, we used to stop for lunch at Ukrops grocery in Ashland VA. Good time for a break, both of us found something we liked in their cooked food, and TWO of their pecan pies made it into our car. We swore we'd take one of them home and not eat it on vacation, and sometimes that happened.

Recent trip, BIG shock. Ukrops was sold. DH brought a pie home from the store that took the site over but it just didn't seem the same. This last time I went in to the replacement chain, they didn't even sell BISCUITS!

So, if Ukrops was your store of choice for pecan pies, where do you Richmond ladies get them now??

Sorry I can't help - I've never been there. That's right - stop laughing!!! I live in Gainesville and never been to Richmond. When I get to leave the area it is straight to Tega Cay SC or Murfreesboro TN - gotta see the grandkids!

My mom used to frequent the Ukrops in Roanoke when my aunt was still alive. Then all of a sudden, it was gone. Don't go to Richmond much, so I can't help you there.

I think I'll have to do a google search on 'best pecan pie in Richmond' so I can give Dick hints for his drive home tomorrow. Pecan pie and NC barbeque. What else do you need but sweet tea!

Maureen ... if you can't find a store bought one you really like, try the Country Living County Fair Pecan Pie Filling in a Jar - good stuff!!! You just add eggs & butter, pour in a pie crust, bake 90 minutes, and out comes oooey gooey goodness.

When I was an exchange-student in Richmond in the late 80's, we always shopped at Ukrops...

Yes, Thess, hard to believe isn't it. I always had great service from that Ashland store, and even had on of the Ukrops men help me out with something one time. A clerk, my age, whispered to me...They're all such nice boys! LOL

Default Ukrops pecan pie

When Ukrops was sold to Martin's the whole area went into mourning The Richmond area is seeped with history and the Ukrops family's roots go very deep. I checked my recipes but no pecan pie because I'm allergic to pecans. I will see if I have any old woman's club cookbooks around. . .But I did google and found a recipe at the Martin's site for classic pecan pie, so maybe that'll help!

Default Ps

Sorry, I forgot to mention that the Ukrops bakery is still pumping out their goodies (their cakes are famous around here--at many a birthday party I've heard the person say, "OH a Ukrops cake!" and people come running (ok, sort of running). Anyway, the pies at Martin's should be the Ukrops ones. BTW, I checked my shelf for area cookbooks but there weren't any (I try to scan in recipes I like or want to try and then donate the book to a fundraiser).

Pat, thanks for more of the story. Where do you get Ukrops products now? The pecan pie we got at Martins did not taste as good as I recall the ones under the Ukrops ownership. Perhaps it was just one off pie?

I am a good cook but not a good baker so this is one of those things I like to buy rather than try to make. I will say that the filling in the jar sounds just perfect for over ice cream!
