Default Oh, the mistakes I make...

I want to believe that this is because I'm not a native English speaker, but I thought I'd share some of my mistakes since I started hanging out here...

Believing that the name earlofoxford must belong to someone whose surname is Foxford in real life. (Sorry, Linda!)

In Norway, we say that someone has big mugs (directly translated) when they have big boobs. So I thought the name mugsbigsis referred to someone whose boobs were, well, really, really big. Instead of being someone's big sis.

Be absolutely certain that hiatus was a Creative Team member.

In some way or another, all of these are related to (get that? ha!) the Creative Team... So thank you, CT members, for making me snort when I figure out my mistakes.

And if you have something to share to make me feel less alone in my mistakes, please do not hesitate to add to this thread!

Too funny, Heidi!

When I read the first novel in the Stieg Larsson trilogy, I had such a terrible time with the street names, I started converting them in my head to local street names. Pretty soon, I just skimmed right over them!

Oh Anxela, My foot has been in my mouth many times - here and throughout life as well! Life needs mistakes ... or debauchles etc... You mean Linda's last name isn't foxford.... I didn't know you were supposed to ask questions here in the "links" section much less introduce yourself... I made a page and put all kinds of journaling on it and asked for help... not one person said - you should ask questions here - they were all so kind. I kept copying my favorite pages to my desktop .... for about 6 months dilligently adding all the kits they used only to find out that there was a favorites icon and you could just click and go.... I spell and write atrociusly (probably spelled wrong) thats awful - really bad and last month I found out I could edit what I put in - imagine it's wonderful here! Mugsbigsis - I missed that one too! It must be fun to have a sister that shares your love for scrapbooking! I just figured out your name was Heidi not Anxela who knew!!!

Oh, keep 'em coming! Heidi, this is fun!

It does take a while to discover all the specific features of the gallery and forum. The important thing is to jump right in and participate (like Heidi and Debbi) and before you know it you're the one helping other newcomers.

I remember when I had an "aha" moment looking at Kelly's user name. I said it slowly several times and then the light went on and sure enough I was right.

Debbie, Kelly's screen name is mugsbigsis -- she's Cassie's sister.

Oh Heidi thanks for making me LOL this morning, that is such a riot. Mugsbigsis had me stumped for the longest time, especially since I had no idea that there was such a thing as a muggle...

Why, thank you, Heidi!!
Those who've met me in person are having a bigger laugh at this than even I did. :O) (You can stop laughing now, Phylis.) BTW, changing your signature will no doubt give several people an "aha moment." :O)

And, Anke . . . how in the world could you bring up 3 kids and not know what a muggle was??? For shame. lol
Doris, it IS a HP thing, we don't live in Norway or I NEVER would have chosen that screen name. For that matter, Cassie would probably have never chosen her's either. lol

Heidi, I think we've had a thread on here before about embarrassing colloquialisms in different cultures---but one time I made the mistake of blurting out the name "Fanny" (as in Fanny Crosby, an American hymn writer) to a British church musician, before I realized what fanny means over there. And I'm sure they chuckle over our term "fanny pack" (the little purse that straps around your waist that you can put money, keys, etc. in).

And as for fanny..... well, back in highschool (I went to an American one) I assisted training a volleyball team and we'd always shout... "Keep your fannies down!!!" Does THAT give you a clue Heidi??

I have been here so long, that I have forgotten about any of those embarrassing things I misinterpreted....

Um, as far as I know, "fanny" is the British word for that external part of a woman in the nether regions that contributes to her intimate pleasure. **blush** I can't get any more detailed than that without crossing into non-PG language.

My best friend in high school blurted that out on her first night as an exchange student in Paris. Apparently it's a mistake that is expected, but is still a horrible faux pas.

I've always had the same problem with everyone's screen names. When I first joined this site, I'd go to an individual's profile page to try to figure out what their real names are and where they're from (like when a special layout gets "lifted" and I have no clue who that someone was when I only know a screen name). The problem is, so few people fill in their profile pages for whatever. So I'm still clueless most of the time. Thanks for filling in yours, Heidi. :0))

LOL! This reminds me of when I lived in Spain, and for those of you that don't know, there are two verbs that means "to be". One of my colleagues at work took me to a handball club, and they said that I could exercise with the boys. I tried to explain that I couldn't because I "wasn't that good" at playing handball, and said "No estoy tan buena". My friend started laughing. The day after, at work, he explained to all of our colleagues that I had said to him that "I'm not that pretty". I did learn the difference between those verbs. Instantly.

I can see this as a problem for new members.... I think us "old"regulars use both screen names and real names interchangeably when referring to each other... and I can see it must be confusing for visitors or new members...

At the crop in San Antonio Cassie called me on the phone to meet up and I told her I was with Tracy, Donita and Linda. Her response: "Screen names, Kelly, I need screen names." lol That's when I found out that "don-e-tab" was really Donita B. Capitals make a difference I guess. :O)
