Default Teens Around the World

This question entered my head today:
There is a very sensitive/dramatic/fun/frustrating/important period in a kids life that we (those of us who speak English) call the "teen" years. We call them that because it is the time between 13 and 18 years of age and the years/numbers all end in "teen." What does the rest of the world call this period in a kids life?

There. Now that you've ready my silly response and said, "Cassie!" . . .

I'm assuming it would be whatever their term for "adolescent" is, right?

Maybe they have abbreviations for that term, too? Hmmmm . . .

You know I never thought of that! Good point. Though I suspect that in most European countries they just use 'teen" (said with a very cool accent) thanks to globalism and all that. (And before they never had a word for it, it's a pretty frivolous late 20th century onwards concept)

Oh, for crying out loud.

OMG, that was a typo, Carol. It's 19 here, too. ugh. (NOW, Cassie will be back with a vengeance.) LOL Wait a minute, SHE didn't catch it! heehee (Why do I feel like I win?)

Lynn, I soooo like the accent part. :O)

I'm guessing it's teen around the world. Isn't weekend another of those American words that's been adopted by the world? I just love it when the speaker / writer says, "at the weekend."

And while I'm holding forth, I know the British say, "in hospital"; whereas, we Americans say, "in the hospital." Interesting!

Kelly. Don't pay any heed to Cassie.
I'm with you and now extremely curious. I assume you meant in different languages like Italian or French? hmm.

Linda, this is off-topic, but did you see this article?

BBC News - Americanisms: 50 of your most noted examples

I found it interesting. Many of the items result from a poor grasp on proper grammar but a lot of the annoying phrases represent simple differences in culture.

Interesting list, Sarah! I could care less is one of my pet peeves; it really grates on my nerves to hear it.

Yes, it should be I couldn't care less. Right? But maybe when someone says that, what they really mean is that I could care less, but I just don't have enough energy to adjust my caring level right now, nor to actually finish the sentence!

Oh, Sarah! I just can't wait to go to Stop 'N Shop tomorrow and ask a clerk where all the "shopping trolleys" might be!

(Sorry, feeling silly tonight.)

Mollie, look closely and I think you'll be able to see who stuck their tongue out and who didn't. Then again she does still have little kids at home. :O)

Lynn, I think I'll start saying, fortnightly. :O)

I love the sisterly banter between you!! Having a twin we do this all the time! I'm the 'evil' twin as she is so good!!! BTW as I am not American (lived there for 12 years and am married to one but that's beside the point) I want to apologise for the 'language snobbery' in the aricle Sarah posted the link to. Uggh, as if the English language hasn't evolved continually through the centuries, even in England. Anyways I think y'all talk just fine...

Ok, to answer the question first...

In Norwegian, the age from 13 and up are:
Tretten, fjorten, femten, seksten, sytten, atten, nitten.

We use the word "tenåring", "ten" equals to "teen".

This has made me giggle.

Ok aside from the teen thing I find fascinating how we all say the time. For 7.30 I would say "half past seven" I think in the UK they say "half seven" is that right or am I barking up the wrong tree? What would Americans say? "seven thirty" ? Anyone else?

Love the English language.
