Default First and earthquake, now a hurricane

Just hoping everyone in the effected areas is busy making safe. Sounds like it's going to be a big mess for quite a while.

My parents are in the path---they're right on the Chesapeake Bay. Katie & Randy are also in the path. Anyone else along the East Coast? I wish it would turn & come our way. We sure could use the rain.

We're near the top of the Chesapeake and our county sent out automated calls last night telling us to prepare for extensive power outages and flooding... according to the maps it looks like we're under a tropical storm warning... I'll be running to the store for more starbucks coffee and other necessities Luckily we have bottled water delivered and we have a generator so we should be just fine. My Aunt and Uncle with a home on a canal on Long Island though may not be as lucky. Please keep everyone in your thoughts and we'll all check in.

I took my eldest granddaughter to Ocean City yesterday - her first time at the MD beaches - and with the waves really strong, and high winds, plus me trying to stay sunblocked enough, I decided to come home in the early afternoon. By 3pm, my OC daughter called to tell us that evacuation plans had started. (I had planned to meet her for dinner.) No one was being let INTO OC from that time on.

In taking dgd back to VA today, I had planned to hit Costco and Wegmans on my way home - all pre hurricane news. I wonder how those stores will be! Otherwise, we are far away enough from the water to not worry about flooding. Plus we are on the police grid - so I am told - and have almost never been without power for more than 30min or so in over 20+ yrs. (excepting snowmagedon)

Stay safe all who are in the path.

We're headed for the beach today and will batten down the hatches and carry up the kayaks tomorrow. Looks like it'll be a tropical storm once it hits us -- more worried for those in ct and mass. saw that Laura Bush posted on twitter that in CT generators are their August roof rakes.

This is turning into quite a week for the upper east coast. Stay safe and dry, my friends, and check in with us when you can so that we will know you are all right.

Glad you got what you needed before the rush! I read the Daily Crab Wrapper (er, the Crapital) and it said stores are temporarily out of bottled water. I wouldn't want to be in OC what with the bay and the ocean just a few blocks apart. That can be trouble!

I doubt my parents have to worry about flooding either. They're about half a mile from the river but higher up, they usually worry about wind damage and downed trees. They lose their power frequently---they must be on a different grid up there in Severna Park---and my dad bought a generator years ago. They lost power for three or four days during Snowmageddon.

Have fun! I love hurricanes, as long as I'm prepared and the levees hold.

The good news: Irene is weakening a little!

The bad news: I went out to take pictures of the clouds, which will be interesting while the storm approaches.... but the clouds are mostly hidden by the haze which is due to the smoke from the Great Dismal Swamp forest fire, smoke brought up here by the approaching hurricane... smells bad, looks bad.

[I am NOT asking, what next?!]

Hopefully, the winds will weaken, but they're predicting up to 12 inches of rain in some spots due simply to the size of the storm. Staying dry may be an issue.

Thankful that it appears to be passing us-Charleston with some rain and wind, but nothing major. We did get out of school early, just in case! I am really worried, though, for everyone east of here...

We changed our son's flights yesterday to leave DC today to go back to Antigua. I just had a feeling this might be a mess. Hope everyone stays safe. I am hoping it is not going to be as bad as they are expecting. Prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Thinking of everyone in Irene's path.

@Sarah, we are just one block from the police station. I don't know if what I was told is true but it sure seems to be.

We are now predicting that we will be fine. Why? Dick got the generator up and running while I was out today. If I don't have a/c, I get wicked. "If Mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy." And Mama ain't happy when it's hot and muggy. My dh gets increasingly wise as the years go by.

My daughter in Ocean City/Ocean Pines says her stone house is being boarded up by the landlord so she feels pretty good and is going to see the storm out. Hopefully she doesn't act stupid and decide to go to see the ocean! during the storm.
