Default Classic from a 7yr old

Over the last week or so I've been looking at 'nouns' with the 7, 8 & 9 year old kidlets in my class at school. Yesterday, we were looking at gender based nouns (lots of which have disappeared since I was in school - remember when there were actors and actresses??). We did all the usual king/queen, son/daughter ones and then I asked, "If a man does a very brave thing, we call him a hero. If a woman does a very brave thing what would we call her?"

Puzzled looks all around, and hurried consultations here and there. Eventually some very confident hands waving in the air amongst my 4th graders. Nothing from my 3rd graders. And one lone respondent among my 2nd graders.

"Yes, Esther, what is the feminine form of hero?"

"SUPER HERO!"

Oh, she is a smart girl - I can tell by her name!
There was an article in our state newspaper this week about a group of gender neutral / trans gender young people who what to have a third gender officially recognized: "Y". That would throw the cat among the pigeons!

LOL, thanks for the chuckle, Sharon! You could probably publish a whole book of the marvelous things you hear the kids say.
