Since you wondered . . . We used to come back to our office and unload the trucks, but we have a very wise postmaster now, and we now go straight to the food bank and they have helpers (usually Navy volunteers) to unload our rigs. So the pics I have are not of this year, cuz I don't get to have as much fun with the action not being at the office. What you need to realize is usually these rigs are just as full with mail (but the back bumper doesn't sit on the curb like it does loaded with food). As the mail empties, it is replaced by the food, and it is an awesome feeling. When I used to have to drive my own vehicle to deliver from, there were years I actually had to call and have someone come empty it so I could get to the mail. ;-)
It is a LOT of extra work, so hubby and I volunteer on our days off (it has now been a few years since I have worked a Saturday) and although we can't open boxes on our days off--we can drive around and pick up what is out on top or on the ground. The grandkids usually come along and help and we make a day of it. Yesterday we filled our Rav4. It is such a simple thing, to put a few cans in the box, and it helps so much. Our office does it twice a year--we also do it in November to help with the holiday needs.
And if you didn't do it Saturday? You can put it in there tomorrow. It never ends on Saturday. Trust me, there is always a bit more on Monday!
