Default A Cautionary Tale

A warning not to hang your camera from the door handle when you're using the bathroom. This happened to my 18-200mm lens yesterday when someone tried the door from the other side. Luckily, perhaps, the cracks are only on the neutral density filter but I can't unscrew it. I'm just waiting for the camera shop to open to see if they have the tools to get it off. On the bright side I suppose it will make a good subject for a scrapbook page.

Oh no!! I bet that "someone" was not very popular! How easy it is to do! I hope the camera shop is able to successfully remove your filter. Thank heavens for local camera shops!

Oh Brennie, I like your cup's half full attitude, but I just may have filled the other half of my cup with tears. Do let us know how you get on.

Brennie, I hope those cracks are just on the filter!

I used to hang everything from the door in the restroom. Now the new restrooms built that I've seen no longer have hooks on the door, they have hooks or platforms on the wall inside instead. I guess people have had a lot of purses stolen by people walking past and reaching their hands over the tops of the door. I have done this more times than I can count, though, when I've had my camera with me and no camera bag. I'll remember not to do that!

Thanks for the advice. Hope yours is not a pricey fix.

I've been guilty of hanging my camera on the hook -- no more! Hope the cracks are only on your filter.

I did the exact same thing a few months ago and yes... the filter did come off but the threaded edge of the lens cracked so won't hold a filter now. Lens still works but I'm sure I "must" replace it soon My bag/purse now always goes on the bathroom floor... no matter how gross the floor might look Good luck to you

Phewww. Just back from the shop where a lovely young man managed to get the filter off. I've been so lucky it was just the filter, the lens itself wasn't damaged and neither was the camera body. I'm so glad that I buy most of my stuff from them, I think that they're struggling to compete with internet prices but I don't know where I would have started trying to get it fixed over the internet. So support you're local store you never know when you'll need them. Thanks for all the messages of support ladies, DH wasn't really getting it

I've heard so many stories of the lens filter saving the lens. So glad it is true for you.

Good to be reminded!!

Glad that things worked out! I generally try not to bring my camera into the bathroom, or if I have to, I sling it across my chest. Cannot put my purse or camera or anything for that matter on the bathroom floor, waaay too gross for me!

What great news! Yes, I have been guilty of buying things online, too, but ordered a new bag from our local camera shop last week even though it was more expensive - for all the times they've freely given advice.

Ohhh, Brennie, I bet you sighed a huge sigh of relief to know it was only the filter. Happy for you! Your tale is a good reminder to all of us to be careful where we leave our camera.

Yay! A happy-ending parable for all of us---but most of all for you. Whew.
