Got one a few months ago that hubby loved... so he took it and I got the iPad for me. Seemed perfectly fair. We both have the same kindle acct for books for both tablets and I'm having so much fun reading all the old classics again... for free. I definitely suggest the 3G version for the Kindle.

This is dependent on your cell phone reception. I most often have "Edge" reception on Kindle, which is techno-speak for "Really Backwoods Slow." It usually takes 10-15 minutes for me to download a book. On the rare occasions when I can claim some of the 3G for myself, stealing it from those greedy iPhone bandwidth hogs, I can get a book in fewer than 5 minutes, but never in 30 seconds.

I also have the first generation Kindle but have given 2 of the newer ones as gifts. Mine is wifi and I even downloaded a book in the Cayman Islands last year and it only took about 30 seconds. I love my Kindle!!!

hubby just got one from his office staff for Christmas. We are still learning, but I really liked it. He is not a computer literate person at all, so it might take a while for him to get used to it. I would also like to get him a light for it so he can read in a dark car

I don't know if Diana Gabaldon's Outlander is still free, but it was a few weeks ago. I download a lot of the free fiction to try out new authors, and delete them if I don't like them. I think Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is around $5, or it was last week when I bought it (haven't read it yet). I recently read Gina Holmes' Crossing Oceans. It was free when I grabbed it. I wasn't familiar with her as an author, and it was Christian fiction, which I typically avoid because it's usually hokey. But this was a different ballgame, and it moved me and affected me like no other book I've read recently. I cried almost on every page, because she struggled with the fears I struggle with every day. Not a "happy ending" book, but really, it had the happiest ending possible.

I got a nook and love it, I am really excited about the light I got for Christmas. I buy a lot of books and then they sit on the shelf, I was really excited to cut down on my bookshelf space. I love all the free books, but I am a little disapointed on the prices for new available books. Call me cheap, but if you are going to put the paper copies on bargain price for 3.99 and the e-book is still 9.99 it's really frustrating.

I just discovered this list on Amazon for limited-time special offers. They are all free for now.
Amazon.com: Limited-Time Offers: Kindle Store My Kindle has wifi only, and I love the speed at which I can download books. But now I need to stop downloading and actually go READ!! |

Another great place to download free books, new releases too, is your local library without walls. I found a couple of books on my "to read" list there. The only problem is I had to sign onto the hold list.
Just realized the library books are not compatible with the Kindle, but are with the Nook and Sony e-reader.

For those of you who have the Kindle, did you research the Nook as well... and why did you go with the Kindle instead?
I have been looking at the Nook, mainly because you can "check out" books from the library on it but everyone is mentioning lots of free books through Amazon for Kindle. Are their free books ever new releases or the more popular authors? I just don' buy books and don't want to add that expense on top of paying for the reading device! Thanks! |

Turn on your wireless and "Shop in Kindle Store." Go to "Kindle Best Sellers." It will take you to the PAID page, but in the upper right-hand corner, you will see Kindle Best Sellers Free. That will take you to this list. The only way to find the free books by searching is on the amazon website, which I find frustrating. But if you download a lot of the free books (I check the list every day), you will get recommendations at the bottom of your Kindle Store screen, and they will all be free, too. I enjoyed "Crossroads Cafe," though it was quite explicit. The story was good and I liked the characters.

I got the Nook earlier this year and LOVE it! I thought I would miss the paper, but I really don't. I like that I can download a book anytime I want. Nook (like Kindle) has lots of free downloads every week so you can sample different authors. My daughter got a Kindle for Christmas from her hubby and loves it as well.
