Default Maine hotel suggestions

I need some suggestions about bed/breakfast/guest houses or hotels that you guys have stayed in and can recommend in Maine. My DH and I are coming over the end of June and have been invited to spend a week in Maine with a WONDERFUL, inspirational, creative lady I met right here at DD. I also get to hang out with the amazingly talented Patricia as well!! I can't wait!!!!

We have started making plans for before and after that week so I thought I would ask for recommendations as we wind our way back from Bar Harbor to Boston. Are there any places we should NOT miss? Any places to stay that you can recommend? - or any places we should stay away from?

I just thought I would speed up the process a bit. Trip Advisor is wonderful but I trust you guys more!

Fiona

I stayed at the Galen Moses House in Bath, Maine, and loved it. It is *rather* quirky, but Jim and Larry, the owners/proprietors are really nice people and really go out of their way to make your stay wonderful.

The photos on their website do not do it justice-- it is much prettier than the website photos.

I've only been to one place in that area, but it's not Maine. Thought I'd list it anyway since I don't know what the distance might or might not be. We LOVED this place and the owners are so fun and personable. :O)

Oh yeah!!!! My hometown!!! I'm from the Blue Hill - Bar Harbor area so I can help you when you're in that area but I'm not sure I'm going to be much help farther south than that. What I do totally recommend is that you drive from Bar Harbor to Boston using Route 1 and stay in Camden. There are a million wonderful bed & breakfasts there and I'm sure they're all wonderful.

Have fun!!! I'm totally jealous!!!

I stayed at Union Bluff in York last week: Oceanfront Lodging Hotel | Union Bluff Hotel

--- it's in the touristy downtown area (and you'll have to be parked offsite and shuttled during the summer). The rooms in the new green building--The Meeting House-- are AWESOME. I was at first in the old building -- small and just not so great.

The staff was really really incredible.

I am so with you on this Steph. When I took my family to visit my friends and host family in Maine we drove route 1. So much more to see than cruising down the high way Since we stayed private I have no idea of places to stay though.

You should visit the little town of Stonington when you are down east by Bar Harbour - just the drive down from Blue Hill is a thrill with it's nature and the most amazing bridge to drive our (never seen something like it) .... and all those lobsters.....

How long will you be in Boston? Are you spending any time there or just flying in and out? Faneuil Hall/Quincy Market is a fun take. A nice Italian dinner in the North End (any little place is great!). If you enjoy history, all or part of The Freedom Trail is very interesting. Also I hear the Duckboat Tours are fun. All the Back Bay hotels (like the Copley Plaza or the Park Plaza) are expensive but nice, there are some waterfront hotels as well. I don't really know of any B&Bs in the city all though I'm sure there are some nice ones.

Good luck and have a great time!

Yep - Stonington is quite a drive from Bar Harbor but it is much more "real" Downeast Maine than Bar Harbor.
