Default CS3 Crop Tool Help!!

I saw a video on TV this morning that was using the Elements crop tool. (I think it was called Scrapbook Memories)

They said to set the width and height as 12 in x 12 in, 300 pixels AND to make sure that No Restrictions was checked.

Well, on Elements it looked like it was right at the top where you set the size and pixels. I looked in Pixel Aspect Ratio...but golly...I don't know what to do even if I was in the right spot!! Duh!!! LOL

I can not find it in CS3...not even sure where to look.

Can someone clue me in?

They were taking a pic and croping it to fill a 12 x 12 page with just part of the photo being used yet fitting the 12 x 12.

Thanks!

Hey there!

Here's one way to do it in Photoshop CS3, although there may be several more...

A caveat: I always set my photos and layouts to 300 pixels/inch before I start doing anything to them, so I don't need to adjust that setting before I do what I'm about to tell you.

Select the rectangular marquee tool. At the top of the page, underneath the menu bar, there are now some settings for this tool. Go to "Style" and select "Fixed Size" from the pull-down menu. In the boxes that are now highlighted next to this setting, you can now enter whatever values you want for width and height; you also have to type in either pixels (px) or inches (in). Now click on your photo (with the marquee tool still selected), and a 12-in x 12-in dotted box should appear. Move this box to where you want it and then select "Crop" from the Image pull-down menu.

Hope this helps!

Best,

Best,
Thanks! That is how I do it now but this is supposed to make it so you can select just a small portion of the pic and make it 12 x 12. It was a cool effect and I would love to be able to do it. Thanks for your feedback!!! Appreciate it!

When I open a photo in CS3 and choose the Crop tool, I get a bar at the top with places to choose width, height and resolution. Is that what you are talking about? You don't get that bar when you choose a photo and the crop tool? Hmmmmmmm..........

Lynnie, I do get the bar that shows width, height and resolution, but on this video I was watching, it had another place to check (in Elements) that was called No Restrictions and they said to make sure that was checked.

I have looked and looked and don't see anything like that.

Guess I will have to try to do it some way else. This looked so great when they were done.

I have it taped. Will watch it again (VERY CLOSELY!!! LOL) tonight and see what it might be.

Thanks!

Even without the box that says No Restrictions, I think the bar in CS3 will work just as the one you saw in the Elements video.
