Default Snowed In?

Hope everyone in the path of that horrible storm is okay . . . warm, with plenty of food, safe, with electricity (or a generator!). (Some of you ladies think 2 feet is nothing, but it's an unusual amount for the mid-Atlantic region to get all at once!) My parents have at least 18 inches, probably closer to 2 feet. Katie, Maureen, Connie---everyone else in the line of fire (or ice)---I hope y'all aren't too bad off!

Stay warm!

Sarah

Wow... they are getting slammed... while we sit at 50 degrees and sunshine! I'm hoping we get a blanket of snow to cover these ugly brown before Christmas!

Hope everybody is safe and warm at home!

thanks Sarah! We're embracing the snow! Being fairly new to the mid-atlantic and coming from Chicago we've missed the snow [just a little] and this is the first real snow in two years and the most we've ever had here! We were out taking some pictures and are planning to run around with the neighbors tomorrow when all the snow and wind dies down! The camera batteries are charged! Hope everyone else is enjoying it too!

I have been inside all day, took a couple of pictures from the door and through the window I am trying to get the house decorated, so there is so little time for anything else. We have quite a few inches on the ground and it hasn't stopped all day! I like to look at it but hate to drive in it!

Still snowing pretty had here! I'm loving it! News is reporting 16 inches in my city. I took a couple of pictures through the window. I was thinking I would wait until it stops before I go out and take pictures. Since I'm new to a dslr I don't want to ruin it or my lenses. But I was thinking of going out and at least getting a night shot. Any suggestions for a beginning setting?

Glad everyone is enjoying it! Bummer for the businesses that will be closed this weekend. Anke, I wasn't sure if you were in the path of it or not! Angela, I'd love to hear recommendations for snow shots.

Actually, Sarah, I think 2 ft of snow is a lot all at one time, and, I'm from snowy Minnesota where big snowfalls and blizzards are more common. The difference is that for most of the areas being hit by this storm the snow won't last. When it comes here it is with us for the duration of the winter until the spring thaw!

Stay safe everyone in the storm's path! I hope there are no power outages and if possible you can all stay inside where it is safe and warm tonight.

Well the 2-4 inches they were calling for us turned out to be 2 feet I stayed in the house for the most part today, although I did venture out to shovel the porch and fill the bird feeders. This is normal weather for us, so they didn't consider it to be a blizzard here LOL.
My poor son was called to work last night for 8:30 to go to Baltimore, he works for csx as a conductor, at 11:00 this morning he still hadn't made it there, I haven't talked to him since and am hoping he made it to the hotel and not having to sleep at the station.
Looking at the weather reports, we are to get snow all week, with another big storm possible on Christmas.

We're pretty much snowed in today, but it's very still and beautiful, with long Icicles hanging everywhere. It looks like a Christmas card. And it's been so quiet here, I haven't seen anyone outside all day, too deep to walk in.

The snow is more than two feet out back, though that could be from drifts.
We're pretty much stuck for now. Tomorrow will be trench digging from one house to another to make sure everyone is okay.

Keep safe everyone.

Hope he made it, too. Someone told me the estimate was revised to 20-30 inches. I think my parents have a little over 2 feet by now. They will be driving to Roanoke on Christmas day, I hope there's no more coming!

This may be crazy- but I envy your snowfall - wish we had it. Well, maybe just for one month! Hope you all stay warm and dry.

Glad to hear everyone is coping okay so far! I can't believe that, here in BC, all our snow has melted in the last couple of days. I'm beginning to think we may have a green Christmas!

we got lucky here in in central NC and were just south of the snow line. we had a few hours of snow, with about a 1/2 inch on the deck, then it changed to rain and by yesterday morning it was all gone. but just an hour to the north had at least 6 inches. and my old stomping ground, Charlottesville, VA, about 4 hours north of us, had 16 inches.

I totally agree with what Merr stated above. We frequently have 2 ft snowstorms and it's horrible....I just can't imagine how the large cities deal with the snow and power outages (that is our concern...as we need it for heat and water and that gets dicey when it's below zero.) I hope all of you are able to keep power. Drive safely!

Our weather has warmed up..but as Merr said the snow will be here till spring! Hope you gals enjoy it and get lots of photos. Looks like the new Snow Pushers Kit arrived just in time!

They keep saying we are going to get hit with rain in Northern California but it has been going to Oregon and Washington. We sit here still with really no big storms for two years now. In a drought of sorts. I miss the rain and storms but then again I'm not dealing with Snow.

Well I'm still enjoying it but then it does help to have electricity. We almost never lose ours because we are on the same grid as the police station. (What a difference a few blocks makes eh Sarah?) I had food cooked before we went to Boston for our return and it was just a matter of going to the freezer. I also froze most of a quart of milk but did forget to get eggs. Oh well...

However, our furnace seems to have had an issue Saturday night and while the resident engineer seems to have diagnosed the issue it will take a HVAC person to repair it. We do have two gas fireplaces and both our office/studio have space heaters so we're toasty.

Our small section of street almost never gets plowed and I'm going to call the Mayor's office (the new Mayor) today and remind him we vote too. Dick did most of the shoveling of his car yesterday and then we worked on mine. Our neighbors had, as usual, by then, shoveled a 4ft wall in front of my car. They do it all the time and I had hoped to catch them this year and ask them not to. It's a cultural issue I know as they are from Cyprus and it's the same with the daily sweeping of the sidewalk and street ...it all gets put in front of my house. Sigh.

Maybe by this afternoon if the sun continues we'll go out, but probably not. The schools are all shut and so are the Feds. That's a big one! The Fed rarely closes as Dick and I both know. Finally, I think this is one time that we had more snow than Angela over in NoVA. The Bay usually keeps our snow minimal or fast melting but this powder just sits there lookin' pretty.

Ha! That's great. My mom says Josh Cohen seems like a nice guy---maybe they'll listen and come plow your street. My parents still have power, too, but who knows, when it starts to melt and freeze, ice is always a problem. My dad is elderly, I feel bad that he was out shoveling all yesterday afternoon. If we had been there, we could have helped.

I was reminiscing yesterday about my college days. I lived in Laurel in an apartment during the bad snow in '93. I had to get up at 4 am to go shovel a spot out behind my car so I could pull out and get to school. It took 2 hours to get it cleared enough to pull out. When I came back, someone had pulled their car into my spot, and I had to double-park and spend 2 more hours shoveling another place. Needless to say, I skipped work and school the next day and didn't leave again until the parking lot had been plowed.

Unlike the rest of Maryland, the snow last forever here too, the disadvantages of living in the mountains.
Kathie, I've been keeping an eye on the weather, looks like a pretty good storm moving this way, hope your family can make it/ and safely.
As of now, they are calling for ice here Christmas, hoping that forecast changes, I rather have snow then ice.
