I've been using sparkpeople.com to count my calories for me and to keep up with my calories burned though exercise. Between Aug and Nov 1 I lost 6.5 pounds and 10.5 inches. It is definitely a struggle every day to eat better.

When I was confronted with the necessity of changing my diet (the weight loss was secondary) I didn't count calories, but spent a lot of time reading and understanding what food was, how our bodies use it, and what types of food are "bad" and "good" (glycemic index) and how foods are good or bad simply by virtue of quantity (glycemic load). I lost almost 80 pounds in 4 months and kept all but my 15 pounds of baby weight off. (I'm having a stinkin' hard time losing this baby fat, since I have a tendency to build and hold visceral fat.)

Anyone can do it, really, and I encourage everyone who is successful at it. But caloric restriction is difficult because it is not a lifestyle that can be maintained---at least joyfully, for most people. So if you're giving it a go, try to work with philosophy of food more than with calorie counting as a permanent weight goal method.

Congrats to Kevin and Amanda! It feels great to shed that much. I lost what my daughter weighs, and when I pick her up (she's almost as tall as I am now), I think, man, how did I carry that around every day???

Today, and every day, I am thankful to be healthy, alive, and with so many food choices that I am forced to make wise, careful decisions. It is a good problem to have.

that's exactly it Sarah! I was eating too much of a good thing before and now i can see it is also about portion sizes but much more about quality of food. My family eats very healthy thankfully.

I agree with you Sarah. I'm not "dieting" but I'm trying to learn to eat everything in moderation and stay with in a healthy calorie range each day. It was amazing just exactly how many calories I was taking in each day before I started being more conscious of it by inputting everything I eat each day into sparkpeople. I have learned to eat pretty much what I want but in moderation by using measuring cups & the scale to get the right serving size.

Great blog! Calorie counting can be so confusing-it seems like the target amount varies according to whom you read-but tracking is a good thing!
