Default Anyone have a Flip Video Camera?

I need a new video camera desperately. I am not heavily into video, but I want one nice enough to catch Jake in moments, possibly sports events next year. I don't have the time to do major editing projects since I'm so into photography already.

If I get a new camera, it has to be HD for me. But I am not quite ready to spend the cha ching for a Canon or Sony. Are the Flips far enough along to work for a couple years until the prices come down? Think I can get good video with them for family events?

Any input would be appreciated!

I have one and I love it. I would say its all about 'fun' rather than super professional. BUt the 'plug into the back of your mac and play' part did it for me. You can edit them, upload them, save them, email them.... and its super handy size means you nearly always have it in your bag

I have one also and it's great fun and takes a good video. I have never pushed it's limits just take ordinary daily videos but I think for the money it's definitely worth while. DonnaNJ

I'm considering this Kodak Zi8 which has gotten rave reviews and is HD and plugs into the Mac.
Amazon.com: Kodak Zi8 HD Pocket Video Camera (Black) NEWEST MODEL: Camera & Photo

Randy take out the link if it is not ok. Thanks.

I have a Flip, too! Bought at after Anna Aspnes mentioned having one. I love it because it is small and I can carry it in my purse.

The most fun about it is that my grandson, Henry, loves to create and perform little shows for me which I tape and then we plug it into my computer to watch the video on the full screen of the computer. Then I burn the shows he creates to DVD and he brings the DVD home with him to show his parents.

Like Mel said, it is easy to share your videos with others, too.

I definitely would buy it again. I've used mine a ton! In fact, I've been thinking of getting my sons each one for Christmas even though they both have more expensive video cameras. The small size makes them less obvious when you are getting shots at family gatherings; great for recording candid moments.

We found an old Flip Video (1st generation) at the Unclaimed Baggage store in Alabama for $20. It works great, we love the ease-of-use, even though the resolution definitely isn't as good as the movie utility on my old point-and-shoot was. In fact, I would prefer to buy a little $120 Nikon Coolpix or Fuji Finepix with super-zoom and use that for video. The zoom was the big thing for me.

we just bought one a couple of weeks ago to take video at Hayden's hockey games...I love the simplicity and direct uploading to our computer.

I need to p/u an extra rechargable battery - it doesn't seem to last long...but I am turning it on and off alot.

We got one for my mom and we use it now and again. I will agree with everyone else in that it is super easy and portable and great for the "I wish I had my camera" moments. However . . . I would never, not EVER, depend on it to be my family video camera. It just doesn't have the stabilization of a "real" video camera. You need some weight in the camera to be able to hold it steady, kwim? I hate to be the one to throw any doubt on this for you, but it's just my 2¢. The Flip is a "bonus" video camera to throw in your purse, not one to be the one-and-only keeper of family videos. Again, just my 2¢.

Oh, I agree with Cassie! I think of the Flip as another fun toy to have in addition to all the other techie stuff we buy! If I were younger with a growing family at home I'd be saving up for a more substantial movie camera, too.

Thanks so much for the input. Michael wants me to look at the Canon Vixia series. But the Flip sounds like fun too!

I have the newest Flip video sitting in a box in the closet waiting for Santa to deliver it to my hubby. We have a much nicer camera but he never did anything with the video as it had to be "processed" so this one should make it much easier to actually see the videos

At the school where I teach we have a few dozen of them that students can borrow for class projects. I think that's probably the ultimate test of usability and robustness! They are great. The students never have any problems.

I agree with Cassie...you don't want it for your main camera, but it is fun to throw in your purse and I am happy with the results I get from it. I think of it as the video equivalent of a point and shoot camera. But dang they're cute!!

Kathie definitely has the best explanation... a point and shoot version of a video camera

It's good for convenience and easy to upload. But for low light situations and stability, it ranks very low for me. I purchased it for my girls to have fun with so they would stop using my good video camera (old but good) and eatting up all the tape. Yes I said tape. LOL.

aww, thanks, Wendy! The only thing is I'm not a cookie grandma! Something has to give, you know!

The only reason I know about any techie stuff is because I hang out here at DD with all of you. I get ideas from you all!
