I want to get a new ipod (my 8GB is full) and love the idea of the iTouch. The 32GB is an 'acceptable' price. Then I saw the 64GB for a little bit more, then realised I was getting closer to the iPhone prices! I wasn't really in 'need' of a new phone yet (mine has a good 5MP camera), but I'm worried that if I spend all that money on an iTouch I may regret not getting the iPhone. I really couldn't justify upgrading again for a long time.
So does anyone have any experience with either or both? Any thoughts or preferences? Thanks

Not sure why you would get a touch if you can get an Iphone. I guess the bottom line is, what do you want it to do. (the current MacWorld magazine has an overview of the Ipod family/Itouch and Iphone. This might help you sort your needs vs price and can do.)
I have an old Heavy Ipod that dh bought, and had engraved so I wouldn't return it. It's always been way too heavy imho but is a good storage device for lots of my music - 42GB which is about 1/3 of what I have. It was once storage for my photos also but... I now have an Iphone and love it, but still think about getting a shuffle to listen to at the gym (if I ever went ...). I only need one hour or two of music at a time. My primary interest in the Iphone is 1. a phone, and 2. a device to sync with my iMac. We both have Macs so our calendars sync easily. 3. Intenet and email If it's only a listening device, would a Nano work for you? Not sure of the storage on those now.

We now have prepaid plans for iPhones so we're not paying large monthly plans to run one.

I just got an iphone today for my birthday (big surprise ... I've been teasing my kids that I was getting one, but never really expected to) ... love it already!

The iPhone is an incredibly cool phone. It has transformed how I feel about cell phones completely. Things work. The address book makes sense and is easy to edit. I use the calendar all the time. I use the internet access a lot. Maps--wonderful.
My son just got an iPod Touch and he loves it, but a phone was not an option for him (we're not paying the data fees for a 13yo who doesn't need a phone in the first place!). Because it limits him to wifi for internet access, it's quite a bit less versatile once we leave the house (but he is very happy with the games). I really didn't think my dh would spring for an iPhone for me--those data fees are really where the money goes--but I love it more than I ever expected.

I have an iTouch and I really like it. That being said, I would like an iPhone too but the extra data costs I cannot justify at this time for me. Also, I have heard complaints on dropped calls. Be sure to check with others in your area about connections. Enjoy whatever you get!

How cool? Waaaay cool, and it made a cell phone convert out of me. I still rarely answer it but I could!
For us it's the convenience of sync'd calendars and address books tho I will admit to enjoying my 14 y.o. grandson's look when he saw me with one. He bought his own this year when he started hs in DC (a 12 hr day for him).

You would need to pry my iPhone from my cold, dead hands. (I'm just sayin'!)

I would love an iPhone. It's the cost of switching phone service and getting a new plan for DH and me that is keeping me from doing it. someday, though! My son has a blackberry and just got an iTouch (he's totally a PC guy) and he is really impressed with the iTouch.

Well I didn't need too much convincing to end up going with the iPhone! And I love love love love it!!!! Never had anything like it before, and as Pattie said 'You would need to pry my iPhone from my cold, dead hands'.!! I can't believe how easy it is to use. The buttons and options are so much more obvious and intuitive. I had it mastered within just a couple of hours. I was finding on my old Nokia that I was looking around the menu a lot trying to find where options were. Now I pretty much just press a button. Waaaay cool! And did I mention the applications?.... wow, what great fun (although you can waste a lot of time looking through them ). I've hardly had time to play with the ipod part of it yet heeheee! And my husband who doesn't like technology, doesn't like computers or mobile phones, and seriously hates spending money is seriously impressed and quite nearly drooling! So any one weighing it up - go iPhone without a doubt! Thanks everyone for the advice, and for 'enabling' me to have some fun.

Now that you have that iPhone, I wonder if we'll see the 'tools' in your signature gradually shift to Apple....

Awesome! I'm so jealous... I have Verizon and am hoping they work it out soon so we have the option for the iPhone. So far, the Storm (my DH has it) isn't anywhere close to as awesome, and the Droid is a "band-aid" imho... i'm stuck w/my hateful razr.
Maureen, I am chuckling at your comment.... my DH is about to chuck our Dell laptops and go with Apple... and i can't say i really disagree. |

i have a Touch for getting wireless internet at home without turning on the computer, and i can pick up internet wherever there's wireless. mine is 32 GB. however, i also have 3 iPods, one 80GB and two 160GBs. Depending on what you use them for, and whether you actually NEED a new phone or something that picks up wireless internet, you can't go wrong with a Giant Big Mama iPod. It takes years to fill the thing up. I have so much video on mine i could probably watch it 24/7 nonstop until i kick the bucket!
