Default just got some priceless heritage images

my cousin had some reason to be surfing through the irish national archives, and came across the 1911 census results. She sent us the links to the images.
found the records for my grandfather, then only 2.
and my grandmother's family (she wasn't born yet).

my grandfather's parents were 40 and 41, had been married 17 years, and had 9 children, ranging from 2 to 16 years old. The oldest must have been out of the house, as only household members are listed and 8 kids are listed. The oldest child at home is listed as "farmer's daughter" (she'd've been done with school at that point). Children in school are listed as "scholars". For education, they were instructed to fill in "read", "write", or "cannot read".

my grandmother's parents were 36 adn 56 years old, had been married 16 years and had 9 children at the time, ranging from 1 to 14. (they ended up with 15 kids. yup, go ahead, thud! with me.) all of the kids are listed as scholars.

and i now have both of my great-grandfather's signatures.

you *know* i'll be pairing these with the heritage series Katie's been producing, right?

Janice! That's wonderful. I came across those archives too and spent many hours poring over them. It's so cool to see the actual scanned documents - isn't it? We were able to find both sets of my grandparents (they were all alive then) and found information about an aunt that my mother never knew she had - the aunt was 15 at the time of the census. Her dad was the youngest of, wait for it, 21!! Many of them didn't make it past infancy however.

As someone who has done genealogy research for years - I know how exciting it is to find a treasure trove of new information. I think I have picked Ancestry.com clean, the US National Archives, etc.

A while back I stumbled upon Norwegian vital records and census archives available for free on the internet and have followed the family of my grandmother, Agnes Holt, who was born in Bergen Norway. The records are in Norwegian, but not too hard to figure out the information. Amazing amount of information was available for someone our family knew so little about (due to her early death when my father was a little boy).

Isn't the internet wonderful?

This is so cool! Can you post or send me a link to the irish national archives you found? I'd love to look up more information on my grandmother's family! I'll keep an eye out for your pages too!

That's fantastic! Look forward to seeing what you do with the information.

Just reminded me that me dad gave me a CD which my aunt had made containing a family tree and lots of scanned documents, might have to go look it out.

Katie - The National Archives of Ireland has a link for the 1911 census. You can search there if you know the townland and a surname. Good luck and let us know if you find anything!

Janice, that is so cool! You must be thrilled

Funny, but just yesterday, my daughter, niece and I went ancestry searching to a site here in Georgia where my paternal Great great grandfather was born and lived. We went to a small genealogy center in the town, walked in, told the woman who we were looking for and she said "oh, that's my family!" Neat, huh?
And the best part...she had traveled to Wales a few years back and said that she'd hit the jackpot there! So now we have that branch back to the 1600's plus some info on, as she put it, "the skeletons in the closet". LOL

So I know how much fun it can be to strike it rich on family history. I'm happy for you, Janice!

This is so exciting for you Janice ... and for you too, Kerry! I have a cousin who is wonderful at research ... and very internet savy on the ancestry front. I love it when he comes up with a new tidbit.
