Default In need of prayers for my FIL...

Just got some bad news this afternoon. My father-in-law was diagnosed with the early stages of prostate cancer and he is only 59! I don't know much about the disease, so I'm off to research a little on the internet.
Please keep him in your prayers, as I'm a strong believer they will make all the difference!

Prayers for his health and healing Heidi. That's a disease that has a lot of hope these days.

In my prayers... I know a little about it because my grandfather got this too... around the same age 62. He is now 80 and doing fine. It really is one of the best cancers to have (if that is at all possible). Generally very slow growing and easy to treat with medication.

Oh Heidi, my thoughts go out to you and your family.
I spent a few years as the Educational Chair for our town's American Cancer Society Relay for Life, and I can echo what Jen said. It is very slow growing in the early stages and quite treatable.
Even knowing this, it's so hard for us not to worry. I hope your research and the things your family learns from the doctor help to set your mind at ease.

definitely keeping him in my thoughts. my dh is going in monday for a prostate biopsy. his dr told him that any man who lives to 90 will get it and, as Jen said, it's a slow and very treatable cancer.

How worrying for you all. I do know it's quite common and that most people die with it once they are old men, rather than "of" it, if you know what I mean. Hopefully his will be easily sorted out.

My DH had surgery for prostate cancer two years ago at the age of 62. He had no problems ... they did robotic surgery. He said that it was a breeze! LOL

He spent two nights in hospital and on the way home we stopped to pick up the pain meds that they perscribed (of which he never used a single one) and he got a chocolate milkshake! He did go to bed early for a few nights and slept late {out of pure laziness . LOL}!

So glad you can turm to your DD friends for support. I would reiterate the same things the others have said. I'm not an expert, but I do know there's a lot of hope. Saying a prayer for your family.

My thoughts will be with him and your family. As just having gone through finding out my father was diagnosed with prostate cancer this month and he isn't much older than your FIL, I can definitely sympathize with what you are going through.

The reading sounds hopeful and you hear so many stories of things working out, that it is hopeful however, that doesn't take away the fear and shock at hearing the news. May you be strong and hold onto hope.

Both my father and FIL were diagnosed in the last couple of years. They have both successfully undergone treatment. For my father, his biggest concerns are his reduced bladder control and his impotency. He has not coped very well mentally with these side effects! So that has been difficult for my mother in turn.

It's true, Heidi, this can be a very slow-growing tumor, and sometimes the doctors opt for "watchful waiting", meaning they approach it very conservatively. Hopefully he will be in that group!

Sending up prayers!!! My grandfather was diagnosed years ago ~ around age 60 or so ~ treatment was successful ~ he lived to be 82 ~ it was the double knee replacement surgery that really was hard on him physically and mentally ~ never was the same since. My thoughts and prayers are with your family! Happy researching! Knowledge is Power!!!

Hugs, Laura C

I'm so sorry Heidi. My mum has breast cancer (and has jelly fillet boobs now which she floats in the bath when she baths!!!!!) My step father has prostate cancer - advanced and evasive. But my FIL has it too and was diagnosed about 2 years ago. he had surgery and is now on hormone treatment, so he doesn't like hugs as his "boobs" hurt!!! He is as fit as a fiddle now. And my dear dad has skin cancer. My Aunt has bowel cancer. I am going on Tuesday for a whole day at the breast clinic to have everything done as I have the dreaded genetic markers in my blood. All I can recommend is that when someone first says CANCER to you - it is very distressing and you immediately think of death and severe illness and pain. There is hope - a lot of it. And there are so many medications and treatments now. Obviously the earlier the diagnosis the better. All my family (except me) are in UK which is very distressing when most of them have cancer. They have McMillan nurses there, which are charity nurses specialising in cancer. They have been so much help, particularly to my step dad who really is in the advanced stages. If you have anything like that there - or a support group, then do encourage your FIL to go. The McMillan nurses are like angels to the patients. And the support groups makes them realise Cancer is mostly treatable and that so many people survive or even live with it. It is a scary word but when you "go into it" you discover it isn't as bad as you originally thought. As for prostate cancer, my DH did heaps of research and discovered what everyone has said - that it is the slowest growing cancer and should be easily removed or even destroyed. Don't worry too much - just be a great support to him and your MIL & DH. Bet he's got a long and happy life ahead of him yet.

I know this is scary for both you and your husband, but I have to echo what everyone has said. We have several friends that have undergone treatment and are doing very well. Prayers for comfort going your way.
