Lightbulb Linking to Layouts with a Thumbnail

Kari has kindly helped me compile the necessary steps for linking to gallery pages with thumbnails. The instructions are slightly different depending on the browser you use and whether you are on a Mac or a PC.

Instructions for Mac Users:

It will be easiest to do these steps if you have the gallery in one tab/browser window and the forum thread in another tab/browser window.

Using Safari:
  1. In the gallery window, right click on the thumbnail of the layout.
  2. Select "Copy Image Address"
  3. In the forum window, click the "Insert Image" icon (yellow w/mountain scence).
  4. Type Command+V to paste the image address you copied in step 1. Click OK.
  5. In the gallery window, click on the thumbnail to open it full size.
  6. Highlight the URL in the browser URL address bar.
  7. Type Command+C to copy the URL.
  8. In the forum window, highlight the image code for the thumbnail. (It begins and ends with IMG in [ ] ).
  9. Click the "Insert Link" icon (globe with chainlink).
  10. Type Command+V to paste the URL you copied in step 7. Click OK.

Using Firefox:
  1. In the gallery window, right click on the thumbnail of the layout.
  2. Select "Copy Image Location"
Click OK.

Lightbulb Forum Tip: Linking to Layouts with a Thumbnail

It also depends on which browser when using a PC...

For a PC with Firefox :
Right click on the thumbnail pic in the gallery
Select Copy Image location

I use tabbed browsing so I flip back to the forum

In the forum post when you click the Insert Image picture icon, on your keyboard press Ctrl-V to paste the link

Before saving the post, return to the gallery tab
on the layout thumbnail, right click and select Copy Link Location

Back in the forum post highlight and select the entire line with the IMG tag

While that is highlighted, click the Insert Link button in the forum post and Ctrl-V on your keyboard to paste the link that you copied from the gallery so it will hyperlink to the full gallery posting for that layout.

Hope that helps!

In IE,
you need to rightclick on the thumbnail and choose Properties

From there you highlight the URL address and press CTRL-C on your keyboard to Copy it.

all the rest of the steps are the same until you copy the hyperlink to the full gallery post.

you can do that either by rightclick on the thumbnail and selecting Copy Shortcut or click on the thumbnail and copy the URL in the address of the browser window.

Which are you doing first? the world with link icon or the mountain icon? I believe what you are getting is the img tags around the url tags when it should be the other way. Replace [ and ] for the ( ) used below and this is the format of the text you should be seeing to get it to work properly:

(URL="http://...link location...")(IMG)http:/ /...image location...(/IMG)(/URL)

I think also if you are using the link location where the image location is between the img tags, you will also end up with what you are getting.

Pam, here is what I do, using a PC, Internet Explorer, and Windows XP.
  1. Open two windows for DD. You’ll use one to write your message, the other to cut/paste the links you need.
  2. Go to the page that shows the layout you want. I don’t go to it from my favorites folder, but instead I go that user’s gallery directly and get the links from there. For some reason, if I try to cut/paste it from my “favorite’s” folder, the tags on those URL’s don’t always work properly to show the LO in the message.
  3. When you see their layout, right click on the image. A box will pop up with information in it. Copy the URL that shows up in “properties.”
  4. Go to the message you are typing. Click on the icon that shows a mountain in a box and paste the URL into that box, then click OK. Make sure that http:// doesn’t show up twice.
  5. Now go back to the user’s page that shows the LO. At the top of the page, you will see a link in the very top area. Copy this link.
  6. Go back to your message. Highlight the entire URL that you already pasted into the message, including all the [IMG and brackets…all of it. Then click the earth icon with the chain on it. Paste your link into that box and click OK.
  7. If you click on “go advanced” at the bottom of your message, you can then click on something called “preview post” to see if it works. If it DID work, you’ll see the image there, and if you hover your mouse over it, it will turn into a hand so you can click the link that you embedded.

good luck!

Works for me and looks like it has been simplified a great deal since the original posts. Clicking that mountain icon, pasting the image location, and voila!
