Red face ? about A Matte Finish No,15

Hope someone can help me. I'm trying the Layiang It All Out a matte finish No.15. I get all the way to page 18 in the instructions and all is going well, until I get to step 9, and then I get a message that says , could not complete your request because the smart object is not directly editable. I have started over at least 5 times and always get to this point. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. Can someone help, please!!!! Pam P.S. I'm working in PSE 7

Hi!
It could be that an item was accidentally dragged UP from the Project Bin onto your working document. When you do this, it becomes a Smart Object and will need to be simplified before you continue.

If that is what happened, here are three ways to solve the issue:

Instead of dragging the element from the Project Bin up onto your paper, you'll need to open it in the large editing window and then drag it down onto the background paper in your bin.

OR
Choose Window> Images > Cascade to drag from one open window to another. I think this is what Cassie shows in that tutorial.

OR
keep things the way you have them and select the layer and choose Layer > Simplify layer before you go on to the next step.

Let us know if this works for you. I'll be happy to help you figure it out if none of these work.

I hope Sarah's suggestions worked for you. If not, feel free to email me directly with the address provided at the end of the tutorial. Thanks!
