Question Moving layers to another layout

Sarah, I watched two videos....linking layers and moving layers around on same layout. I want to move layers off one template to another layout. I know you've taught us where somewhere, but I can't find it.... HELP!

Lynda, all I've ever done to move layers from one LO to another is have both LOs open and just drag all the desired layers to the new one. Of course, I have CS3. I know CS4 is a bit trickier with multiple file, but I believe you can do the same thing by dragging them to the appropriate file tab. HTH ...

Of course that helps! I was trying to make it too hard....selecting the layers on layer pallette and moving from there. Couldn't get the layout I needed to move to to show up that way! Duh. Yep, using them just as if they were open files and moving to tab at top and positioning where I wanted....worked like a charm. Thanks so much Tracy!

Linda, the trick for the layers is click the thumbnail of the layer. :O)

You're kidding!? The thumbnail of whatever I want to move rather than the layer...I'll be...better go try that one! Thanks. So glad you have your computer back so you could reply easily! Did you clean the little thing up, wipe the screen, the mouse, the keyboard, welcome him home?

--------

What am I doing wrong. Two layouts open, click on thumbnail in layer pallette (how do you spell that?) of layer I want to move to second layout. Hover over tab (CS4) for that layout....nothing happens?

if I want to move layers to another layout - I just select (highlight using Ctrl) those layers - choose Duplicate Layers and then indicate to where they should go.....

Linda, you can't drag from the Layers palette to a tab in CS4. You would have to "Float All in Windows" to drag from a Layers palette of one document to the working space of another. If you want to work in tabs and drag a layer from one document to another, you have to drag from the workspace and then hover over the tab. Make sense? If you have a hard time grabbing the right layer from the workspace, turn off the "Auto Select Layer" feature in the options bar, target the layer you want to move directly in the Layers palette, then click-drag from ANYWHERE on the workspace and drag to the tab of the new document. Because you aren't "auto selecting" it will only drag the layer that is targeted in the Layers palette.

Problem solved! CS4. This was the original suggestion from Tracy. Grab from the workspace and move it. Okay....can do that. Thanks a bunch everyone!

Cassie,
I never knew about dragging from the workspace to the tab. I kept trying to make it work from the layer palette. I knew that you could drag to the tab and I would hover, and hover, and hover, and nada! Now I know why. . . .from the workspace. That's seems a bit odd though, don't you think? Wonder why they did it from there and not the layers palette. Hmm. . .
