Default Multi-coloured brush work

I have some of Katie Pertiet's brushes which I love using but I can't for the life of me work out how to make parts of them coloured - similar to her illustrations. I know how to do gradient overlays but some of the brushes I have looked at, for example a flower brush, only has the flower head coloured.

The only way I have come up with at the moment is to stamp the brush in two separate colours on two layers then erase say, all the leaves and then re-position the flower head. Is there an easier way?

Some of Katie's brushes come with beautifully colored versions of the designs in png form. That is not something you can do easily. You can recolor parts with the paint bucket or magic wand tools or even use layer masks, but I would recommend using Katie's colored pngs. There is a tutorial about selective recoloring in the store that can help you change just certain colors in the precolored elements.
