Default ACDSee and Memory

I've been using ACDSee (though I don't know that I'll ever get everything catagorized) but I've downloaded so much stuff that lately it crashes whenever I start it up. I know I don't have enough memory and my current (ancient) computer won't take any more than the 1 gig that it already has. Any recommendations on how much memory, and maybe what type of computer I need to invest in? I have to stick with a PC due to work, plus I can't really afford a Mac, though I'd love one!

Do you have 1 gig of hard drive space, or 1 gig of RAM?

I've never really taken the plunge to AcDSee, but did look at it for a while. There is some good info on digiscrapinfo.com and it seems to me that there is some sort of maintenance that is recommended to run once a week or so to keep the database in good order.

Thanks! Sarah, I have 1 gig of RAM. Lisa, I'll check that site, too.

If you've got an older computer and it's crashing it could be all sorts of things. Does it crash for other software as well? I do find that ACDSee is a bit unstable. It sometimes crashes and I'll have to open it a couple of times before it repairs. But it always does repair, and at least you don't lose anything (unlike when PSE crashes!!!!).
Here are some other things to check:
How much space is left on your hard drive?
Have you got anti-virus software?
How long since you de-fragged your hard drive?
I must confess that even though I teach senior students about computing and know most of this in theory, in practice when one of my old computers starts to play up I take it in for repair or buy a new one

Another problem with ACDSee is long file names. If you have lots of folders that include multiple nested folders the long names can cause problems. To keep file names shorter I try to only have one folder within each file. I usually put everything except the alphabets in one main folder so I end up with all paper and elements in the main folder and then one alphabet sub-folder. Also, try running the optimize database tool.

Hi ellen, I just posted in another thread re: acdsee crashing. Marcie gave the exact advice that I did.

Were you able to get it to work ok?
