Default Overlay question

Hi ladies, Another newbie here (yeah!). I recently aquired some lovely new digi stuff thanks to the DD sales. Now I'm trying to figure out how to actually use it.

I'm trying to work with the AE hand drawn overlays in PSE6 and have gotten stuck. I read the article in the knowledge base and have gotten as far as merging my overlay onto my background. When I drag a picture under the overlay (below it in the pallet) I can't see my picture. This makes since, but how do I get it visible through the cute grid (Cutting out the white part)?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. TIA

Trina

Hi Trina,

I'm betting someone will be along soon to give you a better answer than I could, but I just wanted to say "Welcome to DD"!

Thanks for the Welcome.

I did figure out that I was using a jpeg file instead of a png file (makes a big difference). So now I can see my photo under my overlay but my next question is how do I "erase" the edges of my photo that are sticking out past the stitching?

I am sure there are better ways to do it, but you could use your rectangular marquee tool to cut away the parts of the photo that stick out. Welcome to DD!

  1. Select the Magic Wand tool and make sure "Contiguous" is checked in the options bar.
  2. Target the grid layer.
  3. Click once inside the area you wish to fill. This will give you "marching ants" in that area.
  4. Type Cmd/Ctrl + SHIFT + I to select the inverse (marching ants around your area and the outer perimeter of the page).
  5. Target the photo layer.
  6. Hit the delete key. This will delete all of the picture that was outside of your desired area.
  7. Type Cmd/Ctrl-D to deselect (get rid of the ants).

HTH!

Welcome to DD! It's great to have you here with us

Just another tip for PSE6 - make sure you don't drag UP from the bin onto your page. It can make them have a funny border, resize them, or lose their transparency. In that version of Elements, double-click on the item in the Project Bin to make it large in the editing window and then use the Move Tool to drag it down onto your page in the Project Bin. Just a funny PSE quirk.

Can't wait to see your page in the gallery!

Thank you so much for that PSE tip!! I have been battling that issue ever since I upgraded to 6.0.

My advice is to buy as many of Cassie's tutorials as you can... they are FANTASTIC for answering questions like this and also very helpful for people like me who have trouble coming up with a layout from scratch. They come with lots of papers and elements to add to your collection and I have learned so many helpful tips and tricks!!
