Question Mac wireless techie question...

Hi Mac Friends! I'm trying to find the best way to access an external hard drive wirelessly without mortgaging my house. I know about Time Capsule but i'm not interested in spending that kind of money when I already have four EHD's that are more than enough storage.

I have a MacBook Pro (purchased 12/07)
  1. I tried the Belkin USB Hub which works when it's not locking up the mac. Sold it to a friend.
  2. I tried the WD My Book World Edition which worked but wasn't worth the effort/time it took to mount & access it. Returned to store.
  3. bought Airport Express only to find out that there was a typo in the manual and that it does not an support external hard disk. Will return to store.
  4. Read reviews for LaCie Ethernet which didn't sound good.
I'm now considering the Airport Express but i'd really like to know if anyone else is using one to access an EHD wirelessly, and if so, do you like it? Do you use it as a primary drive or just for time machine? does it read/write without much ado? Do you use a USB hub with it and how well does that work? In short, are you happy with it?

MANY Thanks!!!

Sorry, I can't help out. We use a Time Capsule because it is so much more than just an EHD.. what scares me is that with taking photos, I have already used up over 700GB in archiving all my photos... 300GB to go... then onto the other EHD which is connected to the Time Capsule.

Hope you can find an alternative that will work for you. There are 2 sizes of Time Capsules if you don't find anything else and break down to that alternative.

I connected wirelessly to a EHD I have on my network by using a little app I found called iTimeMachine that enabled air drives in Time Machine... maybe that might work for you.

I have an Airport Extreme and it works to connect my iMac and MacBook and my printers. You are supposed to be able to connect your external HD also. It works great - no problems.
