you know what mine did that a while ago... and I *think* I had to shut down PS and start again. Its one of those nasty scary quirks I think. will be interested to see what the correct procedure is!

Mary, it may be that your PSE Preferences file has become corrupt. I'd try deleting it and letting Photoshop rebuild the file. Here's how:
Close down Elements then click on the Editor start up icon and quickly hold down the Control, Alt and Shift keys (If you are a Mac user Apple, Alt and Shift). Continue to hold down all three keys until you get a screen asking if you want to delete Settings ... just say Yes. Let me know if that works or not.

If it's too fast, there are the actual files that you can rename as .old and it will make new ones for you.
To re-create the Photoshop Elements preferences file: 1. Quit Photoshop Elements. 2. Locate the preferences file for the Editor in Photoshop Elements: 3. * On Windows XP: Documents and Settings\[user]\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\5.0\Editor\Photoshop Elements 5 Prefs.psp * On Windows Vista: Users\[user]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\5.0\Editor\Photoshop Elements 5 Prefs.psp 4. Rename the extension for the file (for example, to Photoshop Elements 5 Prefs.old). 5. Start the Editor in Photoshop Elements. Photoshop Elements creates a new preferences file.

You just have a freakin' fast computer! I could make a cup of tea and still have time to press the buttons with my desktop ;-)

I'm curious about this, too. I've been having that happen periodically in PSCS3 for the past couple of weeks. It will be fine and then all of a sudden will only type in caps. It resets when I close the program and reopen, but what a hassle!
