Default Product suggestion: Worn edge

Hello DD designers,

There is an effect done on paper layouts that I haven't seen a digital equivalent: the worn edge created by using a distresser on the edge of the paper or photo. Anna's Torn-n-Tatterned overlays are close but do not have the exact same effect in that Anna's have tears and the edges are kind of straight. The effect I'm thinking of have edges that are "roughed" up and very worn, but not tears.

One place I've seen this effect done a lot is in the Close to My Heart Idea Books (Stamp and Scrapbooking company).

Hope that makes sense.

There are many things in the store that can give you different worn and weathered looked "distressed". There are distress brushes, Katie has a sanded edge action that works, dry squared brush works too.

I am sure others will come along with more ideas... I would look through the gallery... there are lots of examples and everybody list the products they used.

Welcome!

Do you mean kind of a curled, rubbed edge? That would be cool. Sounds like something up Anna's alley

Delofamily, thanks for the suggestion, but I have used the Katie's sanded edge and Anna's distressed tools. They are not the same.

Stacy, yes the rubbed edge. That's exactly what I mean.

Hey! Try Cassie's wonderful tutorial on creating a distressed look:

Thanks BillieBee, but that's not quite the look I'm trying to describe. Using the distressed / sanding / inking brush like in Cassie's tutorial, the edge is still straight. The effect I'm looking for would have a jagged, roughed up edge. Something like the worn cover of a book would look like.

A mask or overlay, similar to Anna's Torn and Tatterned, would allow you to clip the paper or photo so that the edge wouldn't be straight. And with an additional blending layer then the highlights could be achieved.

I'm trying to find a picture to show, but having a hard time finding one.

Anyway, just an idea. Sorry that it's clear as mud.

this definitely sounds like something that anna could tackle. she is out of town right now and then moving soon....but we'll make sure she sees this post when she gets back.

Could you use a torn edge, merge the layers, and then use a distressing tool? Not sure if I get what you mean, but I thought I'd just throw the idea out there....

Have you tried Anna's Fotoblendz masks? They give a very cool effect, although I'm not sure exactly what you're looking for. I used one on the photo in this layout:

Anna has tons of these masks that achieve different edges.

Thank you all for the great suggestions! I do have 3 of Anna's Torn N Tattered, 2 of her FotoBlendz, and 3 of her Distressed Tool Sets. Although the Torn N Tattered is really close, it's not quite the same. And totally agree with Lynnie that the FotoBlendz are amazing! Their artistic effects is really cool.

It would be best if I can find a picture because it's worth 1K words, right? Maybe I'll try to get a hold of the catalog where I saw the effect and scan it in.

Or perhaps, it's just like Torn N Tattered, just without the Torn part. Hmmm... Worn N Tattered?

Yay, thanks, Lynn!!

http://www.designerdigitals.com/digi...B1%7D1%7B8%7D8 is exactly what I was looking for.

Edit: Sorry, I thought it was made by Anna, but actually Lynn is the designer.

Well, gosh! So many of my photos actually look that way already, and to think that I've been trying to "restore" them! LOL!!!

Now I will certainly buy these to make my newer photos look like the older ones!

What's old is new again?

LOL - I think it's funny too that lots of people buy Photoshop to "fix" up their old photos but we like to "mess up" our photos!!

It's a great way to make the photos stand up and add realism though.

Am hoping to do some page-sized worn-edge and crumped overlays soon too. :-)
