Default computer trouble

sorry to bother you all. I am in the middle of creating a LO and my PSE5 won't let me do a thing, I can't save and can't open a file. I get a not enough RAM message. I don't have anything open , closed all the files I don't need and I should have enough RAM on my laptop. Any idea what could be causing this? I am really bummed, especially since I wanted to join the chat tonight, plus I put quite some time into this LO already. What should I do?
Thanks

Does the layout you're working on have a lot of layers? Even if other programs are closed, if your PSE is using a lot of scratch disk space to keep up with your layers and changes, it can cause the software to freeze up. How much RAM do you have?

I have close to 2000 I think. There are a few layers with masks, but I have had more

Unfortunately, if it's still frozen, you may just have to restart.

When you restart, hold down the Shift, Alt/Option, and Control/Cmd key all at once to reset your defaults and "reset" the software. That might help with future problems.

Were you doing anything specific when it happened? Working with fonts? Using Bridge?

I did install a few fonts a little while ago. When I restart the computer do I hold those buttons or PSE?

you only hold the buttons when you launch PSE, not the computer.

thanks so much, I will try that! If I make it to your chat tonight, I better go on my desktop, so this won't happen again.
