I have a real issue with privacy. I get that you don't put your scrapbook pages or photos out there if you don't want them seen or shared. I share on this site because I'm very comfortable here, although I realise 'other' people may see what we post here. But I'm feeling really uncomforatbe with Pinterest. Don't get me wrong, I love Pinterest, but people are now pinning scrapbook pages, so anything we post has the potential to be seen by thousands of people. This really bothers me. What are your thoughts on this?

Good idea, Lori. We want to respect our member's/friend's wishes to not have pages shared beyond our DD community, if that's how they feel! And most of the time, people would be flattered and not object to being pinned. So I agree, add a note to your comments if you want to request that your page doesn't get shared beyond DD. Thanks for giving us something to think about. We're grateful that you'd bring it up, so that we can KEEP this such a great, supportive community!

I don't pin gallery pages, but I do copy the pages to a local hard drive so I can have them for inspiration all the time even when I'm not around an internet connection. I would never share another person's page or photo without their permission (except for family, because I know how they feel). I think you should ask anyone before you pin anything so personal. I make the (incorrect) assumption that anything that is pinned has approval, so thanks for this reminder! If it's super-personal (none of my pages really are, or, at least, they're not so personal that I would feel uncomfortable sharing with whomever), I blur the journaling with a gaussian blur before I post it.

Finding your page pop up in an unexpected site can fill you with a funny mix of horror and/or delight! Being picked up by Gallery Standouts is a buzz. My flickr photo of my daughter being favorited by a foot-fetisher was NOT fun! My flickr images are now restricted.
Unfortunately Pinterest allows anyone to post an image from anywhere. We can have a shared code of conduct but a visitor to the gallery won't be aware of it. I think the only way to raise awareness is to include a statement in your credits. There will be many people who feel the way you do.

Those are really good and interesting thoughts. It never occurred to me since it wouldn't bother me to have my pages repinned, but I certainly understand your apprehension. I think the solution above is a great one and we all need to train ourselves to view the credits before sharing a page. Great thread!

Donna, that is such an interesting point. It's all getting more complicated, isn't it? I'm so glad you brought this issue up so people can decide if they don't want to be pinned on Pinterest and add a note to a layout description if they prefer not being pinned.
*If you ever are pinned on Pinterest and want it removed from the site, I think you can let Pinterest know and it will be removed. I once got a notice from Pinterest that something I pinned or repinned (not from DD) was being deleted at the request of the originator, so, I know they will delete. That said, it is a good reminder to all of us to think about how much personal information we want to share on the layouts we post in the gallery.

I haven't gotten into Pinterest but do FB and several galleries. My DD and I were talking about this not long ago and she was saying how she is so careful to not put her son's school and other information out there. She gets really frustrated when people post on her wall saying they saw her son at a certain place or name his school She has really limited access to her FB page for that reason. I know I've been guilty of sharing too much - trusting old soul that I am! However, I CT for another site and a couple designers and have started being super careful to not add names or any information.
That being said - I really like the "family" feel here and probably am too comfortable in posting information. The upside of sharing is that you do begin to feel like you know each other - and that is special!

If you don't want anything of yours pinned or screen copied and shared in other ways, then don't put it on a public site. People here may respect your wishes and not Pin a page etc but don't presume that the general public will even when asked.
Something pinned from this site or another links directly back to this site or the original location. Yes, you can ask Pinterest to remove something of yours that is pinned. I have seen where something might have been up but is no longer visible, with a note saying removed by owner or some such wording. But the bottom line is, if you have posted something anywhere on the net, it is always available and you really cannot know how many people and sites and search engines have access to your postings. Places like the Wayback Machine are available to the general public but there are many many other sites that are not. Caveat poster.

I realise this. I don't really think you have to be like that about it. I didn't want to take my pages down from here, and I am careful with what I put online. I don't do Facebook or have a blog either. I'm just not happy with the ability of Pinterest to just 'pin' anything, anywhere, anytime.

Thank you ladies for your thoughts on Pinterest and sharing. The world is changing and I'm never very good at accepting the changes
! I think Pinterest is a great place to collect our ideas and inspiration, and I wasn't implying anyone was using it for anything other than that. There can always be an unsavoury element in any situation or place or time in the world. I will just have to decide whether I want to put it out there or not .

I just saw some lo's on Pinterest and realized that once someone pins a lo and it is available for re-pinning, any disclaimer the original post may have included would certainly be lost. But, the whole topic seems moot to me, because you don't know who is viewing scrapbook site galleries. Once you post it, a lo is available to anyone, no matter how cozy the initial site seemed. I am a little cautious about including locations and full names in lo's, but frankly, if someone wanted to cause me or my family harm they would figure out a way. It is definitely something to consider no matter what we're posting, or where.

I agree with Maureen and Liz. Unfortunately, as soon as you post anything, it becomes 'public domain', no matter what your original intention. I don't do Pinterest or FB, so I can't keep tabs on what is posted there. I too am guilty of sharing too much.

Donna, I didn't mean to be offensive to you in any waybut just giving you a serious caveat. I'm sorry if it came out that way.
![]() If it's on the web, incl locked password protected sites, it can be viewed in many many ways. I know what I'm talking about here. The net is a wonderful opportunity for all of us but you need to know what you are dealing with when you use any part of it. Just presume nothing is private and everything is permanent.
