filter issue in PSE 10

I just upgraded to PSE 10 from PSE 6. I was trying to apply the sprayed strokes filter to a simplified font layer, but the filter is not working. I click filter>brush strokes>spray strokes then the window opens up to display the options. When I change the options with the slider nothing at all happens; my layer looks exactly the same in the preview window. I chatted w/someone online at Adobe today who said it was a technical issue & I need to contact phone support (not open on a Saturday of course). I went back into PSE 6 and this filter works there. Is anyone else having this problem with PSE 10?
