Default Argh! Broken camera.

Emma managed to drop my Canon 40D last night

It says Error 99 and no matter what I do, e.g. remove the battery, memory card, change the lens etc, it sounds like it is taking continuous photos! Anyone else have this problem?

We don't have a camera shop nearby so it looks like I will have to send it away. My question: is it very pricey to repair or is it time for an upgrade?

Oh no!! I have no idea what that all means! You will be lost without your camera. (It does sound like a great excuse for an upgrade!)

I googled "canon error 99" and came up with this forum. Canon-error 99? - DPChallenge Forums. Apparently error 99 is a catch-all error code. It could be anything from dirty contacts to it is broken for good. Some suggestions for cleaning contacts in here, but since it happened after a fall....Good luck!

Ugh -- that sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach. I hope it's not down for the count.

Yes....error 99 is a general error message that I seem to get on my Canon camera from time to time. Luckily my camera always comes back to life after cleaning the contacts or switching the lens and has not had to be sent out for service. It is such a bummer to be without a camera and it always to happen at the worst times!

Ah thanks everyone! Yes, I know there other people with bigger problems (I work with palliative patients, so I try hard to keep things in perspective), but my heart did sink, especially with all the holidays coming up. I'd rather be without an oven than a decent camera! Thanks Susan, I will check out that forum and let you know.

If i do have to upgrade, not sure what to get after a 40D? I have LOVED that camera.

So sorry to hear about all the breaks! I hope Mum can stay safe in bed and out of harm's way until next week! I'm also hoping you can get your camera ship shape with a minimum of cost. If not, to a new camera!

OUCH - you did have a bad week!!! I absolutely and totally swear by Canon and their customer service!! I have sent several cameras in for repair. Even if you decide to upgrade, I would still send it in and see what they say. If it isn't too costly, you would then have a "spare". Good luck.

I know that you are just sick about the broken camera. Poor little Emma must feel bad about it too . . . she knows how you love it! Good luck on your camera decision. I have the Canon 50D and love it.

What?! You broke your finger and a tooth?!! What is happening to you, girl?!! Well if bad luck comes in threes you've had your dose for now, but you haven't done it by halves!!!!
The tooth will be an expensive fix, too! You poor thing!

I swear by Canon customer service too, give them a call, if you decide to send it in for repair they'll give you a number to include where you can track the repair. I know how you feel mine quit when I was on vacation in Italy (thank heavens I had my old camera body with me as a backup). Canon also has a customer loyalty discount too, they'll probably tell you about it when you call. They offered me a great deal on a 7D that I was really tempted with, but the repair on my 50D was free (still under warranty). It only took just over a week to get the camera back. (and btw I'm not the original owner and they still honored the warranty)
