can any of your resident geeks
explain to me what the alias is in my Mac finder? Very often I find what I am looking for, but when I click on the folder it will tell me that the alias can't be found and do I want to fix it.... where does that even come from? It is such a pain....

An alias is a copy of a folder/item. If you delete the original, the alias will remain but have nothing to go back to. I have also found that if I move a folder (and I only use aliases for folders) I have to ask Mac to search for it.
e.g. I have the original folder of Jana's class on my ehd. I have an alias on my desktop, and as I download the videos, I drag them to the alias.I also have the layouts I've made in this alias folder. In reality they are on the original on the ehd. If I move the original file to my hard drive or somewhere else, the mac would tell me the original wasn't found. I'd just copy the name-exactly!-and do a finder search for that original and then I can link it correctly. hth!

btw, the alias folder has that little curved arrow on it; the original does not.

LOL...I'll defer to Heidi here. I know she's busy this week though according to a layout or post?? I don't think I ever found an alias that I hadn't made. Sorry not to be more help with that one.
re the moving, just think if you moved anything in trying to use ACDSee or Lightroom etc. It's easy to forget some of those moves, for me at least. My bottom line, is if I have the original and don't want the alias any more, I delete the alias. The original isn't touched.
