Default I love my laptop (kicking and screaming)

I have had my 17" macbook pro since it first came out. I LOVE it, I get ATTACHED to things like my washer, dryer, laptop, etc. Call me crazy and OCD. It is hard to let go. My geeky DH thinks that I need a new one because this is getting so slow. I am used to slow. He has worked on it and it is as fast as possible on an old machine. I will not give in, I will not give in.

I said that I would prefer the new Wacom Cintique since it is the same price and he delivered the blow that this laptop will not even run the new toy.

Ahhhh . . . I still love my "good ol' laptop"

Sallie

Sorry, Sallie, my laptop is getting slow too. Darn it! I love mine too.

I understand, Sallie! I have been attached to every single Mac computer I've owned. My current one is my 17" MacBook Pro purchased late 2008. If I decide to upgrade to Lion I probably should add more memory first. That gets expensive to add memory so I start wondering if I should just buy a new laptop with Lion already installed, instead. Only problem is I love my laptop because it WORKS!!! always, I can count on it! (knock on wood, here) and, it is familiar!

I get attached to the software, and don't want to upgrade, but I'd throw away my desktop in a second - and load it up with as much ram as possible. If you have to replace your laptop, I am certain that within a day you would be wondering why you waited - but I would like the new wacom myself before a new computer, but it does seem that all the great toys need a super fast machine.

I felt that way about the minivan I just traded in, but believe me, I got used to the new car real quick I'm sure I would feel the same way about my trusted MacbookPro too

I'm very very attached to my iMac and unfortunately, they don't sell the 24" size any more. It's past its extended warranty and I have the max memory -4GB - it can take. It can take Lion and all the newest software but I suspect this is its last go round on those fronts. A bigger iMac could be great but I'd need to push it back a bit more while at the same time having it in the same place so I can 'read' text on the screen. DH has suggested that I just get the Tower but I'm not sure I want to spend quite that much.

If someone told me to get a new mac, I would just say "thank you"

That said. I format and do a clean install on my mac about once a year. I notice a big change in speed after a clean install. Have you tried that, Sallie? I would suggest doing that before something drastic. And I installed more RAM last year. I'm looking at an SSD disk too, they are dropping in price. That would do wonders on an old machine.

Not sure what a SSD disk is Heidi. Do tell!

(btw, I AM grateful I have a spouse who never balks at any electronic purchase. Plus, I am not into cameras at all so...)

A solid-state drive (SSD) is a drive that doesn't have movable parts (as opposed to a regular hard drive which contains spinning disks and read/write heads), and because of that, it's super fast, silent and reliable, less vulnerable. It's more expensive than a regular drive per GB, but if you normally store your scrapbook elements and pics on an EHD, you can just buy a relatively small disk to hold your operating system, software and stuff that doesn't take up much space.

LOL Heidi....dh makes fun of me when I say 'the gears are grinding" because sometimes it does seem that way! a regular hard drive which contains spinning disks

And from a discussion at MacRumors "And yeah, the iMac is a totally different beast with an SSD - start-up times are practically non-existent, application launching is instantaneous. Very impressive stuff, I wouldn't go back to a traditional HDD for a boot volume ever again. " hmmmmmmmm. I may need to look into this for my 24".

Sal, dh gave me his old MBP when he needed a new one. I use needed advisedly. I love using it when I go to my son's and dogsit, but it does have its limits. As I only scrap on it, it's fine but if I try to watch a Netflix movie, I usually need to be plugged in. Not really much of a hardship, is it!
