Default shutterfly book question

it's been a while since i've worked on a book and can't remember the following, if anyone can help me...

what size do we "resize" our 12X12 and 8x8 in pse so that it fits the page for the book to be safe with regards to getting things cut off? I still keep a .25" margin for anything.

do you still have to turn on the vivid print option? i don't see that anymore because they've really changed the site since i was last on.

thanks!

Hi Stacy,
Yes, Shutterfly has changed recently! I used them for 2 books in the last month using their new Custom Path option which takes some getting used to, but, it did work using the full bleed option for my layouts.

I turned off vivid pics in for each layout I uploaded. I did this in the album where I uploaded the layouts by going to edit and then choosing effects.

I created my layouts in 12 x 12 size and plopped them into their 8 x 8 size book. I did not resize. As I examine my pages in the printed book I see that on some pages a teensy bit more of the bottom part of the page is cut off than the top! My best fitting pages left more than .25 from the edges. From now on I am going to be more careful.

I have never had a problem with cut-off edges when I use templates from DD for my pages. These last two books happened to be collections of miscellaneous layouts.

I hope someone comes along with the correct re-size dimensions for you because I think that might work better in case you didn't use a template.

I may be wrong and those with better technical skills than I have ..will probably answer later.... but I believe its 1/2 in smaller than what you are doing ie 7.95 x 7.95 or 11.95 x 11.95 .... as long as your careful with whats on the edges you should be okay Ie pictures important stuff etc in about a 1/2 inch it shouldn't be a problem.

thanks for the info...

regarding the vivid pictures, when i upload the pages/pictures in custom path, do i double click on each page/picture and change them in that edit mode individually or is there a way to do it all at once. I didn't upload them into an album on shutterfly first because it was easier to just do it while i was in the custom path book.

one more question...do you have to select a "book now"...you just can't go to a blank book anymore?

thanks!!!

Stacey

I am so glad you asked this question I am working on my first digital pages and plan to upload them to a photo book. I have always used Shutterfly to make photo books before but I used their custom book design as opposed to full "scrapbook" pages.

When it says you should leave .25" bleed around page - what exactly does that mean? Do you resize your jpeg (image) to be a bit bigger... increase your canvas size ... or leave the image at 8x8 or 8x11 size and just make sure your pictures and elements are .25" away from the edge of your scrapbook page. This is quite confusing to a newbie

I came across a photo book site today - Mixbook - that seems like it would be really fun to work with. Have any of you every made a book with them?

Thanks,
Lorna

Lorna,
I'm not sure what bleed actually means, but what i do is make my page 12x12 for the psd file. Then I resize my image to either 11.95x11.95 or 7.95x7,95; depending on the size I want. Then save as my jpeg to upload to Shutterfly. I found with the new custom path that I had to just select a "style" of book, then go in and change the page layout so it was just one big "gray" block the size of the page to drop in my entire scrapbook page. Not sure why Shutterly completely took out the blank canvas to start from scratch.

If anyone knows of an easier way to do this, I'd love to know!

I figured out how to turn off the vivid pictures! I'm trying to work backwards and do yearly books. Right now I'm only using one designer's frames for each page and trying to keep it as clean and simple as possible.

I wanted to get done by the 3rd b/c Shutterly has a 30% off special, but I'll have to wait until the next sale!

Let's post when we are done!

Thanks Stacey!

I am doing the same thing - working backwards on yearly books. I, too, have a set of templates by one designer and would like to use them. They are very simple and have options for few or many pictures.

My problem is the size I want to do. I love 11 x 8.5 books - portrait style and shutterfly only does the 8.5 x 11 in landscape. I could use all of my templates in the landscape view but then I end up having to redo them because all of the titles and journaling blocks are designed for portrait.... not hard - just annoying and time consuming. I cannot understand why the 11 x 8.5 size is not more popular. I feel like 8x8 is to small and 12x12 are hard to store. Oh well......

I would love to see your pages/books when you get them done!

Lorna

Lorna, I think what you're asking . . . it's backwards--- 8 1/2 X 11 would refer to portrait, 11 X 8 1/2 would be landscape---which is why I got excited because I thought I had a solution for you . . . but anyway, try Blurb? They do an 8 X 10 which is not quite the right dimensions, but at least the right orientation.

I think most people who do 8 1/2 X 11 probably print at home.

I hope you find a solution!

Lorna, I was just checking printing companies out this morning and found that Inkubook does the 8.5x11 portrait books and the landscape 11x8.5.
