Having trouble transferring files from EHD to Mac?

Good morning, brilliant friends! I'm hoping someone can help me solve this mystery:
I keep my digital stash on my EHD (Passport). I work on a laptop. I back up the EHD to my desktop Mac. I keep a file on the Passport labeled "New," which is where I put anything I've recently bought, so that's the only file I need to regularly back up on the desktop Mac. I'm trying to do that this morning, but when I try to transfer the files from the New folder on the Passport to the desktop Mac, they show up for an instant and then just disappear. Is there a limit on the number of places you can save a file from Designer Digitals? I ask because I have a few freebies from other places that are transferring, but almost my entire stash is DD (of course! )

Any ideas on what I might be doing wrong?

There won't be a limit of the number of places you can save any file, I think...

Have you by any chance made them "read-only" or something like that?

Hmm...I'm not sure! Under "file info," it says "Read or Write" next to my name, but "Read Only" next to "everybody" and "staff." I'll try tinkering with that - thank you so much, in the meantime, for responding! I can always just download things again to the desktop.
