How do you keep track of what products you used in a layout?

If I was going to guess which scrapping friend made layouts with 80+ layers, I would have guessed Amy Mallory! (And they're beautiful.) In PSE, I left my supplies open in the project bin as Amy does. In CS5, I rename my layers. I tried the smart object route, but got tired of having to rasterize the layers to work with them. I like to rename the layers anyway, makes it easier to 'find' things as I'm fine tuning a layout and also allows me to go back and get a product later if I want to make a coordinating layout.
