Question ? Running a program from an ehd ?

This is a totally new concept to me and came up in my ACDSee class. I asked dh about it and he said he'd done it years ago with programs because of need but isn't doing it now. (Remember how little memory those old computers had...like in the 90s?? LOL and he just meant another hard drive, not an ehd)

Since ACDSee is a small program re actual space, it occurred to me that both the program AND my supplies would fit easily and with much room to spare on a 500GB ehd. That way there would be no issue in moving from the iMac to Macbook.

Am I correct in thinking I read that someone here was running PSE or CS from an external???

I'll be checking back to see the DD answers Maureen. Interesting concept and one that I've never thought of before.

All my programs are on my hard drives. (Desktop and laptop). If you were running the program on an EHD and using multiple computers I think you would need to make sure the appropriate files were in the system folders/registry on each computer.

I have had all my photos and digital scrapbooking supplies on an EHD and ran PSE on my computer because my laptop had a very small hard drive. It worked great. I did not use PSE on more than one computer, so I don't know how that would work. Theoretically it should work to use your photos, etc. on more than one computer as long as the same version of PSE is on both, but you would need to be sure to keep the drives the same also because PSE points to the photos in the Organizer by using the drive paths. If the EHD on one computer is drive D and on the other computer it is drive E, then I don't think PSE would be able to find the info from within Organizer. I am not sure how ACDSee does it. Perhaps it works differently. I did like not needing to worry about space because i was using the EHD to store everything.

I was glad to find out that yes, I can run ACDSee from my 500GB LaCie ehd - the orange rugged one. What didn't happen was that all my info on my files did not appear.

However...on the ones I tested, that had the info embedded, the tags were visible once I cataloged those files on the LaCie ACDSee.

One moral...it would have helped if I had started all my tagging on/in the LaCie version of ACDSee. However, it's a live and learn lesson. I'm not embedding til I have all of one folder done rather than file by file. I don't seem to see any way to identify if a file has been embedded. I think Katie's folder may be done by Labor Day! LOL

I've got all my DD files on an EHD. I've got ACDSee on all my Macs. I don't trust the embed feature.

I save my database (which gets huge, I might add) with the Backup Database command in the Tools drop down menu then copy that file to the computer where I will use the files (depending on where I am).

When I open ACDSee I use the Restore Database command and then the program can read the files from the EHD which travels with me. That's the plan..... I'll report any deviances.

I don't run the software from the EHD, to respond to the actual question! lol

Patricia, how big is your current - most recent - database? and are you talking about ones that are named like this...
ACDSee Database Backup 31.05.2011 10.05.32.mediaDatabase ? that one is 929.6MB

I'll try your method next week since I do have the program installed on both computers, and probably ditch the copy on the LaCie.

Any reason you don't trust embed? (Actually, I'm not trusting the whole program that much right now...tho I really like seeing the files in it and having a relatively fair experience in doing searches.)

After removing the orphans and getting about a third of the way through my Katie collection the Database file is 6.32g. I have currently 142 categories and my Katie folder has 2595 sub folders each with several items and some sub sub folders!!
And about 3500 more folders with subfolders for our other fabulous designers.

Just in case you are wondering I DO occasionally think I am crazy. But every time I start to question my sanity, I do a little search and start laughing out loud. Then the people AROUND me start to think I am nuts but I know I am just in digital art ecstasy!!

I think you and I could be best friends. I LOVE organizing my digital supplies. My hubbie can not understand why I organize anything. He thinks if it is in the little box (the hard drive) it is already organized. How messy can stuff in a little box get huh??

Since I've got most of my digi supplies tagged and organized, I then did my fonts and now I want to work on my brushes. Is there a twelve step program for us??

Jenna, I am thinking that when I get this all finished I might do a chat for one of our quarterly sales about organizing.... Until then I can't quite figure out how to copy the complicated tree structure into one page!

Stand by for the fall chat... no promises though. LOL
