Default Selection Problem - need help!

I'm working in PSE7...I have a template open...I used to be able to click directly on different elements and select them. Now I have to go over to the Layers panel & select them there...I can't even click "off" template to get a clear view of what I'm working on...whatever layer I was last working on stays selected.

For some reason this is REALLY annoying to me (probably because I'm a lefty and that Layers panel is waaaaaay over to the right, LOL!) Does anyone know if I accidentally made some sort of change in a menu somewhere, or is it an issue with templates in general?

TIA!

I am working with CS5, so I don't know if it's the same for your program but sometimes when I restart my program, I need to re-click auto select and show transform controls at the top left (on mine) I don't know why they go unchecked sometimes, but not all the time. See if they are checked. I know it's a simple thing...

With your move tool selected make sure your 'auto select layer' box is checked in the options bar at the top. This allows you to select the layer on the template.

That did it, Donna! Thanks so much...I always forget about that options bar at the top

Can you reposition your layers panel on the left where it is more convenient for you? I can in Photoshop CS and I think you can, too, in PSE.
