Type troubles :{
First of all, I am working on a Mac in PSE 8. Lately, when I try to add type, the letters are spaced out too far. It even happens with script fonts. It almost looks like you are hitting the space bar a couple of times between each letter. Just can't seem to figure out what the problem is. I know that I can change the leading, but that just refers to the space between the lines not the individual letters, right? Would appreciate any help.

I'd do a reset type tool. When the type tool is selected, on the tool bar near the move tool, there will be a "T", just like the type tool icon. Click on it and a drop down will appear which offers "reset tool" or "reset all tools". That usually works on my PC! Good luck.
