Default Mozy

What a rip-off! I just got a notice from Mozy that the plan I was using is no longer in existence. The same plan would now cost me about 129 $ I just sent them a note. I am furious! It's going to be EHDs for me from now on. After spending all that time on the initial backup, I think this is comparable to piracy! Don't use them!!!!

Ya, I saw that note today! I switched from Mozy over to Crash Plan after I learned that they maintain file structure and Mozy didn't. It took about a month to do my upload to Crash Plan and it finished while I was in Vegas. So glad I made the switch and that I could cancel the Mozy plan today right after they raised the prices!

Anke, doesn't Heidi use Crash Plan? You may want to ask her.

I got the same email, and I am ticked as well. I will not continue with them past my contract time. I know I paid for a yearly contract, so I have time left to determine what to do, and the email said that of course, the new fee would not take effect until my contract runs out. I will be switching in time, as that is a major change. I am angry! Correct me if I am wrong, is anyone on carbonite able to back up from external drive, as they could not do that when I signed with Mozy. Also, what is everyone's thought on crashplan - ie external drives, etc?

I think Mozy is going to be losing a lot of customers - that's a BIG jump.

Wow, I'm glad I dropped them back in July when my contract was up. I've been backing up to EHD's ever since and have no regrets.

Backblaze does EHD.

Do you all that just use EHDs, back up to two of them? Thanks!

Crashplan does EHDs. I love that they maintain file structure. I tried a restore, and it works great. They also have a lot of great non-cost alternatives in their software (back up at a friend's house (via the internet), which is free, as well as to another EHD or computer at your house, and of course the online backup which is $54 a year or something (less if you choose a 3-year plan). I also find that the backup is a little faster than with mozy.

The software is really great, lots of restore options, easy interface.

Oh, and Anke, that means that you can use Crashplan as a kind of Time Machine as well. Since it can backup to another EHD as well. But I believe that it will not keep more than one copy of a file though, so not as good as Time Machine, but since that isn't working for you it's better than nothing.

I use Mozy and haven't rec'd any *crash plan* email. This comes as a big surprise to me. Did you get this email because your plan was up for renewal?

I use Carbonite and love it. It restored my data twice for me. (one hard drive failure, one teenage boy computer repair tech failure ) It's $55 annually for unlimited backup. And I keep an EHD backup at my mom's, which is usually a couple months out of date but oh well. I only have 257G backed up on Carbonite and I know a lot of you have more. It keeps file structure.

Carbonite Pro backs up EHD but the pricing is horrendous. It would be $150 a month to back up that amount! Eek!

Me too! I have two EHD's and just copy over all my new supplies, photos and layouts each week to the secondary one. I may get a 3rd just to be safe... so cheap these days that it's totally worth it!

I actually noticed a little warning symbol on my Mozy button. That's how I found out about it at first. My plan doesn't expire until March.
I think I will just go back to using EHDs. Like Elena said, they are so cheap now, just buy a few and the backup doesn't take nearly as long. I will not put myself through this initial upload again, that's for sure....

i've switched to buying bare drives and doing grandfathered backups -- I keep them in our safe.

I agree - I signed up right after Christmas and I'm not even halfway through backing up, and now I just want to forget the whole thing, even though I committed to a 2 year contract. I know I won't renew (the price they gave me was $284!)

I didn't even get my first year that I paid for. My initial backup went fine and the first two months of the daily backups went fine. But then after the two months it started doing a new initial backup for some reason and kept getting stuck at one point. I contacted customer service several times and their suggestions did nothing. After four months I just cancelled the plan but I never got any refund. I'm using two 1T EHDs and 2 500G EHDs right now. I'll check into Crash Plan but I'm not sure that they won't end up doing the same thing Mozy did with the pricing. Shouldn't be this hard, should it!

I had to stop using Mozy because it took weeks to back stuff up, and it was loading my internal hard drive with all sorts of files that it never bothered to erase until one day I realized I had no room. Good bye to Mozy.

I know that EHD are cheap, but I still get nervous at the thought of only having a backup on EHD's. My big fear is - what happens if there is a hurricane, flood, earthquake, fire, and you can't get them out of the house. That is the only thing - I have to say I already have 2 EHD copies, and my digital supplies are also on DVD. I take too many photos to stay on top of getting them on DVD's, although I should. I think if I do go without an outside backup, I would have to take and store one at work (as I take home works backup tapes each week). Just in case!!!

I know this may be sort of low-tech, and might not work for those who take more photos than me, but I use Google to back up my pictures. I upload the best ones (not all) to my Picasa account, which I would do anyway because that's how I share pictures with family and friends. I paid for the extra storage (80GB extra, beyond the 1GB they give you for free). It was super cheap; I think only about $20 a year. And I believe you can get even more than that, too. I'm very happy with it because I know that if something happens to my computer or my EHD, my favorite pictures and all my digital scrapbook pages are safe and outside of my house.

Of course, I also have an external hard drive with ALL my pictures and all my scrapbooking supplies.

I just received the rate increase notice from Mozy but my contract runs through January of next year -- so I have lots of time to research my move. Several services back up an EHD -- that technology has been around for a while. The problem with using an EHD exclusively is that it is a drive like the one on your computer -- it can crash permanently, then you lose your back up.

I really think that if you for any reason don't want to use "real" online backup, at least consider Crashplan, to backup to a friend or relative's computer.

Just buy an extra EHD, do the initial backup and send it to them. Hook up to that EHD with the Crashplan software, and the next backups will go fast, and you have an offsite backup in case your backup disk at home goes down. I think that with a backup at home and a backup offsite like that, you are pretty well covered.

And if you, for some reason, still don't do backups, check out some of the heart-breaking threads about losing thousands of photos. They are here. In this community. It can happen to you. In fact, it will happen to you, if you don't backup your things.

"There are only two types of people in this world. Those who do backups, and those who will."

Heidi, how would you backup remotely to another computer's EHD? I see where you have to install crashplan on the other computer but then what?
