outer glow problems in PSE

I just started playing with the "outer glow" effect in PSE. I pick one of the premade options, and nothing happens. So I double click FX to see if I can adjust the sliders and/or color, and still nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?!

So far, the only way I have successfully applied an "outer glow" is by copying and pasting the layer style from one of Katie's free templates.

Any help would be appreciated,

I have Photoshop, but I hope the two are the same...to add a layer style, I just click on the layer anywhere outside the text and it brings up the layer style dialog box so you can adjust the sliders.

I have the same problem in PSE9, Sarah.

Amy: Opening the dialog box is not a problem...it's that nothing actually happens when I apply the style. There is no effect on the layer I'm applying it to. Very strange. I'm sure it's some simple thing I'm overlooking, but I haven't figured it out yet.
Linda: I've got PSE 7. I wonder what we're doing wrong...

I have this set and PSE7 & and it works just fine. Do you need to reinstall them? Have your tried holding the keys ctrl shift delete (I think this is the combo) to reset things?
