Default EHD for ALL Digi Supplies-good idea or???

Happy Holidays to you all!!
I have been playing with digi scrapping for approx 2.5yrs and have amassed a HUGE collection of supplies - and even though many suggest purging... i simply can't.
Currently I have one EHD with a majority of the files (broken into a few folders...not my designer or theme-that would make sense - - but by the time of yr like iDSD10 for Int'l Digi Day 2010) however most recent ones are on my desk top C drive while I do have some in my D drive - we don't know why - they are mainly classes related ones... and I have been too lazy to move.

my question is -
should I move them all to one huge single folder on my brand spanking new EHD ...as I type this; I think i could move all Holiday related items to one folder and definitely a seperate one for the Digi Goddess herself... i seem to scroll for days thru ALLLLLLLL the KPertiet files BUT everyone and everything else in one BIG folder with nothing else on this external????
your thoughts....

(I use ACDSee for tagging and sorting so truly it doesn"t matter where they are located as it just tells me right away where to find it)

thx tons for your words of wisdom,
Smiles, Carole

I have all my supplies on my internal hard drive, backed up to an external hard drive. Not a good idea to keep them in only one location.

I have them in two EHD's. I don't mess with the folder structure. I keep them in their kit folder, and sorted by designer.

I don't keep any files on my laptop's internal drives. I have 2 500GB EHDs in MN, 1 2TB EHD in FL, and a 1 TB small EHD that I move between locations and use as my working drive. It's a pain but at least I have 2 copies of each file in each location. I tried Mozy and it worked for about three months and then for some reason it started doing a new initial backup and got hung up there. Mozy couldn't fix it and didn't seem to care much when I talked to support so I decided to do the backups myself.

I have two EHDs, a 320 GB and a 1 TB. I decided finally to put all my files on my laptop so I didn't have to carry my little EHD around the house everywhere. I will backup to the 320 GB once a week and the 1 TB once every two weeks.

When school starts up I'll keep my 1 TB at school, and I'll bring it home on Thursday, back it up, and bring it back on Sunday. That way I have an off-site backup. I've wanted to do an online backup service but can't part with the money.

The only irreplaceable files I have on my computer are my photos and my digi supplies, and I have those burned onto DVDs as well.

I keep my files in their original folders but change the names to a more complete, consistent name. (It's the database geek in me coming out!)

I am SO SCARED to move my digi files onto a hard drive... I've fairly recently had horrible nightmare experience with XHD failure. BUT -what a cool move. suddenly my huge computer would be huge again, and fast. Is the general idea then - I'm slow, dont worry- to have all photos and all digi supplies off the main thing? but then *pause, cogs turning* what the heck would you be backing up in time machine??

2 EHDs for me also, one large one for backup and two smaller ones I keep connected, one for supplies and one for photos and pages. I also have Mozy for backing everything up. Keeping things on you computer really will slow you down...

When I moved everything onto my laptop, I used all but 30 GB of my hard drive. I decided to delete my old scrapbooks off and just keep them on my backup EHDs and DVDs.

All I have besides my scrapbook stuff and pictures are text files and sheet music engraving files. They don't take up much space at all! It's amazing how fast these PSD files eat up your memory.

i do the same as Jen. i have NO digi files on my computer hard drive (they take up too much room.) one of my EHDs is where everything lives, and i work from that drive. the other MEGA EHD backs up the first one. and in moments of extreme paranoia, i transfer all the files to DVD, too....

I have a ReadyNas Duo serve (thanks for the recommendation Ms. Pattie Knox ) and all my files are stored redundantly. The only files I have on my local computers is all of Katie's classic cardstock, which shows up on many of my pages, and my preview files. That way it's just a little faster and more convenient.

I think the answer here is the same but in many flavors: don't store locally, and make sure you're redundant. Drives - whether internal or external - WILL fail at some point. We've all read heartsick threads here. I've had my own scares too. You're doing a wise thing.

Mel, I have my digi supplies and photos on a 1TB ehd, which I can plug into either my desk Mac or my MacBook pro, and when it's plugged into the desk Mac time machine automatically backs up to my 1TB time capsule which is upstairs and away from the computers.
So in summary, I have very little on my computer, I have everything on an ehd, and I have what's on the Mac and the ehd backed up hourly to the time capsule. Still going to think about off site storage either with a company or a family member too.
In case you missed it I started a thread a couple of weeks back about why you need your backup somewhere else I'll come back with a link if I can

All my digital supplies are on a 500GB portable EHD which is also backed up on the 1T Time Machine. I also have another 500GB EHD that has all my psds and prints and a bunch of other stuff I took off my computer. I'm not home so I do forget what I put there. That also tells me how unimportant a lot of it might be... That drive is also backed up with Time Machine and ALL of it is off in the cloud on CrashPlan.

I may put all my digital supplies on my Macbook also so I don't have to take the portable ehd on longer/overseas trips. In addition, since Jan of this year I have burned a dvd of each month's purchases and will continue to do that. It's the earlier stuff of my first year or so that never was burned. Oh well, can't have it all!

Am I the ONLY person who keeps my stuff on my internal drive?! I have three internal drives. One is for operating system and software only - it is a super fast drive. I also have a 600G drive and a new 1T internal drive. The 600G is for regular stuff and for the rest of the family to use. The 1T is for my photos, scrap supplies and pages. I figured I was better to get an internal drive because it would be more reliable, more secure and probably a faster connection since it would be directly connected rather than by USB cable. I also have a 1T external drive for backup. I use SyncBackSE to automate the backups - after hearing Izzy talk about it on the Paperclipping podcast.

I put all my stuff on my internal drive this time, but with the caveat that I would backup, backup, backup. It has been liberating being able to wander around the house, using the computer anywhere, without the EHD and cable hanging off. And I think that even though this is a USB 2.0, it really is much faster to run everything off the internal, provided it doesn't fill up. I noticed how much faster my Organizer catalogs run, but it could be because I have 4 GB of RAM on this computer and I had previously been working with less than 1 GB.

I would do that if I weren't on a laptop. In fact, I had my old pc set up with two hard drives. My next computer will also be set up like that. With an SSD for the operating system, probably.

Nope.

I have 4 internal drives. One is specifically for my scrapbooking supplies, layouts, and photos, and a second is for backing up that drive. A third is for my operating system/applications. A forth is just taking up space, actually. It's smaller and has my previous system (Tiger OS) on it, but I don't access it. It's more of a security blanket since I've only recently changed over to Snow Leopard.

Time Machine Preferences - Options - Then remove your EHD's from the excluded disks list.

I have two internal drives in my desktop. One for my OS & software and the other for my digi supplies, photos, and layouts. I used to use Mozy for online backup until I learned from Heidi/anxela that Mozy doesn't maintain file structure and that Crash Plan does. Thanks Heidi! So I started a Crash Plan back up at that time (which was early December). It's still doing the initial back up and it's currently at 63%. I've been wanting an XHD for awhile, but it just hasn't been in the budget.

It wouldn't be a mac standard backup program if it couldn't do that, right?

Yep. You always need a back up of a back up. My photos EHD just failed and I was relieved to have another copy or two lying around
