Default so I will never, ever rent another lens...

I rented the Canon 24-70mm f2.8 lens that I see so many of you gals shoot with---big mistake. I love it and it is soooo not in my budget right now! I am completely unsatisfied with the gear that I have, a truly terrible attitude to have, especially during this season.

So although I need an attitude adjustment, I am definitely loving the lens.

The lens is amazing... and the same thing happened to me. I used a friends and couldn't turn back. The L series Canon lens are just top notch

If it helps I bought a used 50mm 1.2 at Adorama and I am so happy with it. I saved about 500.00. Maybe check and see if you can buy a used one. Lens unlike a camera body last forever!

Well, this thread's making "me" feel better because I have it on pretty good authority that there's going to be a 24-70mm under the tree for me on Christmas morning.

Oh how I agree. I rented a 24-70mm and 200mm, both f2.8L for my nephew's football team state championship game played inside the Georgia Dome. Well, I have been completely blown away by the sharpness of both lenses. Yes, the 24-70 is a little heavy but who cares :-) I took some shots yesterday of ducks/cranes/scenery around a nearby lake and have been blown away by how sharp the pics are. I told my hubby I want one and he said "go fot it". I have a friend that bought a used 24-70 from B&H. Plus the place I rented from, LensRental, also offers used for purchase. I will start a savings plan in 2011 in hopes of having my own L series lens in the next few months. I want to rent the 70-200mm f2.8 IS lens also so I will know which lens I really want to buy. They are high dollar but the quality of the photos are superb compared to a non-L series lens.

Kelly, I am right there with you. I rented the 70-200 2.8 a couple weeks ago and used it on my vacation, and the photos were super-sharp. Now I can't stand using my 75-300 4.5-5.6 but I have to, because it's the only zoom.

On the upside, I've managed to "misplace" my kit 18-70, and I really need a wide angle. 24 sounds wide enough for me . . . but it's definitely way out of my budget.

Cool Jodi! You have a hotline to Santa

Now everyone is wanting to make me try the lens. Way out of my price league.

I have so much to learn about lenses, but this sounds like the one that I need. And just to show how stupid I am, is it a lens for everyday or for when you need a telephoto lens?

I've never rented a lens . . . maybe I should give it a twirl with one that I am yearning for someday!

It's considered a wide angle to "normal" view lens. Telephoto would have a larger millimeter #. My Choosing A Lens tutorial might help clear it all up for you.

Well ladies, the good news is my hubby "gets it" and loves to see pictures of our adorable (of course, I'm biased!) boys. He has definitely seen a progression in my picture-taking abililites and after he got over the initial sticker-shock, he's open to saving up to get it! hmmm, let's see... gorgeous pictures of children or saving for their college education? Just kidding!

My husband also "gets it". But from a different perspective. His hobby is woodworking. His father was also a woodworker. His dad had the basics, but kept putting off getting more specialized equipment until after he retired, even though they could afford to. Then, his eye sight started failing and he had a serious stroke. He is unable to do any of the hobby that gave him so much pleasure now. And when he could, not having some equipment made it that much harder. He has told my husband and his brother not to put off getting the best equipment for the job (of course, you have to be financially able to first) or it may be too late.

For those eying the 24-70 2.8, my equivalent for Olympus (12-60 2.8) almost never comes off my camera anymore. I also have a 50 mm and don't plan to add more to my lenses. My zoom is very lonely.

I guess I should be adding that lens to my wishlist. I plan on getting it for myself for all the overtime I am working (causing me not to do my Daily Decembers). Now the question is should I get the 70-200 or the 24-70 first?

I would go with the 24-70 lens first Joanie. It's a fabulous walk around, on the camera ALL the time kinda lens. Don't get me wrong I adore my 70-200mm but I just find it's not as easy to throw into a bag and go kinda lens. It's heavier than the 24-70 lens (which I also complained initially about the heft! LOL) and bulkier...having said that I ADORE the photos I get with the 70-200. The bokeh is amazing. I use it all the time for just plain old portraits.

Thanks, Katrina. I didn't know you had a lens tutorial. I will be getting it and studying it. Lens talk has always been confusing to me. And I know that reading your tutorial will clear that all up. I wish I would have known this a few weeks ago when telling my dh that I wanted a lens for Christmas, but didn't know what I needed or what would be a good choice.

Those of you who love this lens, are you shooting with a full-frame camera or crop sensor camera? When I had the Canon 28-135 I found it not to be wide enough at times, and I'm loving my 15-85 for that reason (on my crop sensor camera). Just curious!

I wish I had a full frame... but I am using it currently on my 50D

All this lens talk gave me the impetus I needed to push the buy button on the 50mm 1.4. When my hubby gets home from Taiwan I need to tell him our Christmas present is arriving soon!

I have both the 24-70 and the 70-200. I love them both. I would get the 24-70 first, unless you happen to be shooting sports right now (which is the main reason I got it). I have the 40d, so crop sensor.

I'm glad I saw this thread. Doris, I think you are right, the 24-70 would be a great all around lens. I too have a full frame, so it would give me some nice wide angle shots, run through the normal range, and give me a bit of distance as well. The other thing about it is it is about a thousand less than the 70-200. I also thought (for a while), I could kind of hide it from my DD because it is not white, but she knows about the red line on the 'L' lenses, and she will spot that in a second
