It's been hanging and not responding more and more lately and I either need to fix it or figure out how to use LR for my digi needs. Someone said on acdsee's forum to "throw out all the old catalog files" but didn't elaborate on that explanation. That seemed to fix his problem that was identical to mine. Does anyone on here know (a) how to delete the catalog files and (b) will that end up deleting all my existing tags? Does anyone here that uses Acdsee have any other suggestions on how to get it out of it's funk and start cooperating with me? I've tried tech support but no answers there either
I just want to get back to my scrapping! (sigh)

Unstable?!?!?!? omg, I don't like that word.
I would have used that for Bridge which is why I said goodbye to it.

Have you used the tools in the Database menu to optimize the catalog and remove orphans, etc. That certainly helps speed it up. But like others, my version of ACDSee (version 9) is unstable and tends to crash. It doesn't like it when I ask to see ALL of my DD products!! lol! But it always rights itself when I load it again.

I tried it ages ago and before I could even work out how to use it it killed my computer, so now I just use bridge and my memory

In all fairness, it might not have been so much Acdsee's fault as much as something messed up on my pc. I was in the middle of embedding my files within PM 12, left it to run overnight and the next morning a Java update had been installed on my computer automatically and it had rebooted my computer-in the middle of my embedding.
I think that might have been enough to corrupt not only Acdsee but also did something drastic to my computer. I grudgingly uninstalled and reinstalled PM 12 hoping to fix it but even that didn't work which was my major clue something else was going on. I did a system restore back to almost a whole week ago when I remembered things running ok and lo and behold I have PM 12 back up and running again. Not only that but I am now finally able to embed my files so if it ever does crash again I can at least breathe easy knowing I didn't lose all my hard work of tagging and captioning. Knock on wood, all is running well at the moment.

Jan I am glad that you didn't lose anything. I had that happen to me. I messed up switched my database between my laptop and desktop and I could have cried for days.
I started out with Photo Manager 9, and kept upgrading and I think that V 12 is by far the best and most stable. I don't think I have had any issues with the "ACDSee has encountered a problem and will close now." If you need to delete your catalog, here is how to do it: Recovering from crashes. Deleting the cdx files. Also I back up and optimize my database at least weekly, more if I am doing a lot of tagging and moving stuff around in a sort period of time.
