I have just downloaded version 1.8, and find it much better than 1.7, in case anyone still has that. Amongst other things, it updates how much that is currently stored on the servers during the backup, and how much is left on your computer to back up. (This is the mac version.)

I have just downloaded a trial version of CrashPlan, another backup solution, and I think it looks promising. I might switch. They are less expensive when it comes to restoring, they will send you up to 1 TB for $100 plus shipping. And they offer a free solution to back up your data to a friend's computer. Neat. I've included some info about Crashplan in the other backup thread, located here.

Anxela Wow! that sounds very interesting.. please keep us posted on what you decide.. I currently use Carbonite which I'm not overly thrilled with
Debbie That is really scary that it was marked for deletion. Those recovery programs work great as long as the drive isn't physically damaged which most times it's really not.. of course leave it to me to have one that was :-(

Debbie are you saying that Mozy was going to charge you for restoring your files??? I wasn't clear on that. If that is the case why bother with them?
Thanks for the link Heidi, I will check that out and I am waiting for your further reports since you are the geek here. You'll figure this out way before me

Anke, they don't charge if you download yourself. Only if you ask them to send you DVDs with your files to avoid that long-lasting restore period.

Hmmm...I am interested to hear about CrashPlan as well, especially if they give a TB for $100. Last fall we had to send our EHD in to be recovered since I had no backup (bad, bad!) It cost 1K to get my data back, so I always figured that if I had to rely on Mozy I'd happily pay only $300 to get my data more quickly than downloading it myself. But...if I could get that same piece of mind for less, than that would be lovely.

I just installed Mozy the other day - I now see that it is version 2.2 something - but I guess that is for PC ? And y'all are Mac ladies right?
Anyway - I realize it is going to take AGES to upload to Mozy, but assuming it will eventually finish - if my computer crashes - how does it work to retrieve the data? I have to pay to get back what I uploaded? If so, is the 4-5 USD per month for storage only? I guess I did not read the FAQ. Help me out here. |

The restore process works by first requesting files. In 20-60 minutes (depending on the size), you get an email with a link to the zip files. They package your stuff in files up to 1.8GB each, which you download, unzip, and put back where you want them. It is a VERY time-consuming process. I have a PC, too. |

I just downloaded CrashPlan this weekend! I used it to backup to my ehd - I love how it has options as to where the backup is going - a folder, a friend's computer, or online! I am using that as my secondary along with Mozy because I only half trust Mozy and the whole online backup business (had a bad situation with carbonite at work not giving us files).

I'll be watching this thread closely. My subscription with Mozy just expired and they tried to renew it with an old credit card so it didn't automatically renew, which is ok with me. I like Mozy, but me and evidently alot of other people have had it with their issues of not working when it should. I wouldn't mind trying a different company for online backups. I've never heard of CrashPlan. I'll check them out
