Help - PSE8 not opening Tiff files?

Awhile ago, based on threads here on size of files, I started saving my files as TIFF rather than PSDs because they are so much smaller, but I could still keep the layers. That was in PSE4. I upgraded (trial version) to PSE8 and it says 'and unexpected end-of-file was encountered'.

I'd hate to think that for all previously completed pages, I need to go to PSE4 - thus not able to delete it from the hard drive.

Anyone encounter this? have any ideas?
