We have been talking about Mozy because carbonite (from what I could figure) will not back up our EHD's....
You're my kind of gal.

I am really anxious to see how much backup is done during the 2 weeks my iMac is not in use. I had a mini-fit with dh when I told him I was leaving it on, with surge protectors in place AND turning the room a/c on while we were away. It's odd ...he would gladly buy a new computer but balked at having one a/c on. I suppose we're all like that in our own way, but I put my foot down. (My studio has virtually no wall insulation and gets REALLY hot and really cold. nuff said)

I did have one good use of Time Machine before we left. (Doesn't something strange always go wrong just before a long trip?) I accidently deleted my main calendar on iCal and used the prior pm Time Machine backup to restore it. PHEW!!! It took < a minute or so, and eh voila...there it was again. between the two of us we have 5 calendars we synch with each other so coordination is big with us.

Anke, if I recall actually setting up the time machine was a breeze and I think I did it with just the follow the steps directions. Heidi will be a good guide for you I'm sure.
Maureen, let's hook up sometime!

Do any PC users have a tip for the simplest way to make sure you get *everything* in that EHD backup (like Time Machine)?
This one, called Oops!Backup by Altaro calls itself a Time Machine for Windows, but I haven't tried it, so I really don't know how it is. There's something that's called Genie Timeline too. But again, haven't used it, don't know how it works.

I also have Mozy, plus an EHD, plus discs, although the discs are never caught up. I don't see the Mozy as a way to redo a destroyed drive, but a backup incase of fire or theft. It takes such a long time to backup to Mozy that I would hate to have to recreate from it (I have close to 800gb backed up), but if all is ever totally destroyed, I won't mind the time it takes to get it all back.

This is exactly the way I think too!

Don't know if anyone has mentioned this before but both Carbonite and Mozy (along with a few others I looked at) had the ability to put your data on an EHD and ship it back to you. Of course you have to pay for this but in the event of a catastrophy it would probably be covered by insurance. Not sure how they work it, whether you actually are buying the EHD from them or you have to ship it back when you're finished, but whatever it is, it has to be cheaper than sending a damaged drive out to be recovered which around here runs about $1,500

Mozy charges $30, plus $0.50 per GB, plus shipping.

CrashPlan is least expensive, as far as I can see. Up to 1 TB for $125 (shipping included), you have to return the disk they send, of course.

Backblaze charges $189 for a 500GB restore.

I have been looking at CrashPlan, and that really looks like a neat backup solution.

It can backup to another EHD attached to your computer, or even another computer (a friend, for instance, or just another computer in your house), in addition to an online backup. The prize is similar to Mozy for one person backup. I'm uploading to try it now, and plan to do a restore to see how this works too. The upload speed is pretty good, over 500 kbps, 1Mb when I'm not using the computer.

Backing up to a friend's computer is free, so this is a great solution for an offsite backup... You can have a dedicated EHD at their house, and the other way around.

That backing up to another computer sounds great.. it would work really well for me to backup my daughter's computer which I do sort of hit or miss right now.

You know the one thing I wish one of the companies would offer is the option to send them a hard drive for the initial backup. When that's finished you turn on the backup on your computer and it just updates with whatever has changed since you created the EHD. On going the time to backup isn't bad but that initial load for most of us is a killer.

I had an iMac scare this morning when it froze and wouldn't restart until I completely unplugged the power source. Scary moment since I have just started researching backing up all my data. Making run to buy an EHD tonight AND signing up for Mozy! Thanks for sharing all that you guys do to have peace of mind about not losing your data!

Good advice, all, because accidents do happen. Thursday evening I had just finished a slide show of all the photos I took for an event at Ava's church. She got on my lap for one last go at her favorite game on my computer and knocked over a 12 oz. glass of diet Dr. Pepper sitting nearby. I quickly pulled the plug and took out the battery, and prayed!! After drying it out as well as I could, and dh taking out the components and setting it in front of a fan, it worked when we turned it on this morning! Everything is backed up on an EHD and dvd's and all the books I've made are forever at Shutterfly.
My scrapping materials are on a separate little EHD and backed up on dvd's and the large
EHD. Thank goodness I didn't have to use them.
