I sample the background color and then in the color picker, I pick a shade darker for the brush. Like Donna said, the blending modes help too!

Another trick is to use the same paper/color as your background, switch to multiply and then play with the opacity.
Soft light is my favorite, but I usually add a hard light or multiply layer under it at a low opacity to bump it up a bit. Make sure you play with different colors (in addition to changing the blending mode) and not just black/white. It makes a big difference!
