Default Font Manager?

I've tried searching for recommendations already discussed for a good PC font manager program but can't seem to find any threads...sorry if I missed it.
Anyway, I've known for a long time know what a bad idea it is to install too many fonts on your PC, but I keep adding "just a couple", hoping I'm still below whatever the magic number is that starts to wreak havoc...So my question is twofold -
1) Does anyone know what that "magic number" is? Is 400 too many? 500? The darn thing starts with so many stupid fonts installed that I don't even want, yet can't get rid of, I hope it's a reasonably high number.
2) Does anyone have a font manager program for PC that you love? I've tried a couple that my techie friend recommended, but I don't like how it's not so easy to preview the uninstalled fonts. I thought the whole point was to see a really easy to look at list (and sample) of each and move them back and forth? Maybe I'm expecting too much?
Anyway, I am trying to be good about this before I get any more fonts, so any tips would be appreciated! Thanks so much!

Ooh, I was writing this response and I decided to play around---and whoo hoo!---I solved the irritating part you mentioned in #2.

I use AMP Font Viewer, and I love it. But I only keep about 600 fonts on my system. I've gone through and culled them out several times over the years and trimmed them down to the ones I really like.

What I like about AMP Font Viewer is the ability to type in your own text and see it in the preview pane with all the other fonts. I thought that only worked with installed fonts. But I keep my not-installed fonts in a folder on my EHD. If you click "View Folder/Install List of Fonts," you'll get the Interchange Window (the big preview window in columns) and the ability to customize your font sample.

It's a free program, you can google AMP Font Viewer.

Yay! That's actually the one I have that I've been trying to work with, so I'll keep at it! Thank you!

Tesia, if you have any questions, send me a PM or ask me here. I've been using it for a couple years now, and I really like it. I'd be glad to help. I hated working with fonts until I found it---it was such a pain to scroll through them all in PSE.

I've been quite happy with Suitcase, Tesia. Let me know if you try it and have any questions.
