Default Mac problem....

Anyone ever have this issue or know what could be wrong? Suddenly my files won't open through another "program". Specifically I can't get PS to open my iphoto files in less than 50 minutes!!! and I can't upload a layout from my documents folder to DD.

Tragedy (insert Bee Gees version of tragedy here as I dance and sing to get my mind off how upset I am!!).

Strange thing is I can open iphoto and my documents fine...just not when I call them up second hand through another vehicle.

Last time I brought my mac into Apple for a question they broke something and tried to charge me six hundred dollars for something they told me they didn't break...so I'd love to fix this at home! My computer is a few years old so I'm not sure if I'm allowed to even use the apple help telephone support.

Any clues would be GREATLY appreciated!!!!

Thanks!

What you're saying is that when you're inside iPhoto and try to open it from there and into PS, you get a problem? I don't use iPhoto, so I don't think I can help you with that... Is there a way to optimize the iphoto database? Some sort of maintenance tool for it?

I've never had the upload issue either. How are your read/permissions in that folder?

ETA It's probably not a problem with permissions since you can access them directly...

And do you get any error messages? Can you provide the steps you go through in iPhoto? What happens when you try to upload?

I offer this just in case:
You may have already done this, but, have you tried closing all applications and shutting your computer down, waiting a minute and then starting up again? I always try that first when I have a problem. Every once in awhile that is all it takes.

I'm sorry you're having problems and I hope there is an easy solution!! I'll be checking back to this thread.

Hmm. I'm no expert but could it be a memory issue?
I know when my computer is full it takes much more time to get things done. It's strange that it takes 50 minutes to get a photo from iPhoto to PS. How frustrating.
Apple care telephone would work for 3 years from date of purchase if you purchase the additional 2 year support.
I do want to say thank you for putting 'tragedy' in my head. LOL I love that song!

Like Doris and Merr says, it could be something performance related. You could try some maintenance tools - there are a couple of threads mentioning them here:

http://www.designerdigitals.com/digi...elp-tools.html

There are some links to pages helping you do maintenance, as well as links to a couple of helpful programs.

Onyx might help. And empty your trash. Move files from your desktop to another location. Delete what you don't need. Uninstall unnecessary apps (use AppCleaner or Hazel).

Shanah, I know this may be obvious, but I am presuming from your question that your photos are ONLY in iPhoto?

If they are or were elsewhere on you Mac, have you moved the location of the originals? Once in a while iPhoto cannot 'find' the original, and I have to go get it from the original location and reinstall it into iPhoto.

You guys are so wonderful..tyou SO much for trying to help me. I emptied my trash, and I do have enough memory and no I don't get any error messages....so maybe it's a permission issue although I did try one fix for that and so far nothing. I am wondering if it is a permission issue though because I can open iphoto and see my pics fine and I can open "my documents" and see everything fine...BUT...if I am in Photoshop and try to open a pic from Iphoto to use...THEN it won't open without delay....and if I"m at say DD and trying to upload a layout from my documents when DD says "choose file"....THEN it won't open the document files.

It's just strange (ok...annoying is what I really mean!!) that one day it all works...next day BROKEN. Urgh.

I'm going to try reading more of what Heidi posted and the links....I can't tell you how much I appreciate your help. Wish I had an engineers brain but a friend with one is the next best thing...tyou Heidi and tyou ALL for being there for me!

MWAH!!!

The thing with iPhoto, though, is that you're working with a database (at least that's what I think), so you wouldn't have the same issues with permissions there. This is kind of like when I disconnect my EHD and open Lightroom - I can still see the photos stored in the database, but I can't access my photos because they are stored on a disconnected drive.

1) Where are your photos stored?
2) Do you import your photos to your computer with iPhoto, or do you import separately, and then add them to iPhoto?
3) Can you see your photos with Finder?
4) If you can, right-click on a photo and choose "Get info". Go down to "Sharing & Permissions" and see what you find. Do you have both read and write privileges?

And lastly, have you done something, anything with your mac that can explain this? It could be just a tiny little thing, like adjusting a preferences file or something. Or something in System Preferences.

Have you tried using Time Machine to go back to the day before this issue showed up?

My problem is being able to afford the type of Apple laptop that I want. I want a 17 inch screen and 8 mgs of memory, so that put the cost at close to $3,000. I just purchased a Dell Inspiron with 4 mgs and a 17 inch screen, so it handles Photoshop well enough. I hope that Apple will eventually bring down the prices. With technology, the quality generally goes up and the prices go down. Maybe that is why the technology sector of our economy is still at fairly good levels.

LOL... Another kind of problem that I guess we all can relate to. Apple has held their prices pretty steady, while performance has gone up the last couple of years. So you get more machine for the same amount of money. Do you know a student or qualify for student discount yourself? Apple has a program called Apple Student Developer, and if you go into that, you get a 20% discount (once in a lifetime) on a mac system of your choice. Regular student discount is about 10%.

how about if you directly access your photos - fomr the pictures file rather than via iphoto? can you then open them in PS? I dont use iphoto and funnily enough it was this random odd type of quirkiness that made me stop using it. Altho, it really can play these kind of tricks if its full - full memory or full photos on iPhoto- or if time machine is running at the same time { that slows everything down so much...}
failing all this, mac forums and similar forums on line are a mine of both useful info and really kind helpful people.

Shanah, I am thinking you don't have your photos anywhere else on your computer and that they are only in iPhoto.

Can you drag them to the desktop and work from there layout by layout? I sometimes do that if I have a group I want to scrap soon but not immediately. I make a desktop folder saying..Charlottesville e.g... and then work from that rather than reopen iPhoto when I'm ready. Perhaps this workaround would work for you.
