Default Question about LO font size

On my P365 pages I used a font size of 12 for the journaling. When I increase the page size in PSE7 to try to see it in actual size the font looks small to me. (hard to read?)

When I look in the gallery, some journaling on some pages can be read clearly, other's not so much so. Might it be the actual font or should I try a larger size?

Curious what size fonts you use on your pages. Any rules? Thanks.

For me - the font sizes vary depending on my design and how much room I have left over. I tend to journal last. It used to bug me if I couldn't read it clearly on screen, but then after getting pages printed in 12 x 12 - the font was easily legible. I usually don't go smaller than 12 on your basic fonts. I am curious to see what others think too.

I typically use 12 pt. as well, but the size and leading can greatly vary from font to font. What I have noticed is that when I make a page in a 12 x 12 format and reduce it to 8 x 8 for Shutterfly books that the font size is reduced and is more difficult to read.

If I am printing a 12X12 I don't go bigger than 12pt. But, if I am doing an 8X8 it depends on the font... I have gone up to 14pt. I don't remember who said it but if you can read the font at 25% on the computer your good

I usually print in 12x12 and try not to go larger than 12pt for most fonts. Depending on how much journaling I have and the space allotted, I sometimes use 10pt.

Same opinion, different person . . .

When I first started digital scrapping I think I used 18pt because I couldn't see it on my screen, and I forgot that I'd be printing it in 12X12 format. The page was almost comical, it looked like a large-print book. (Nothing against large print! I read them frequently.) I keep my font, depending on the type of font, between 10 and 12 pt. (I open word and type something in Times New Roman 12 pt, and then adjust the journaling font so that it is similar in height to Times.

I'm pretty much the same as everyone else. I too do 12pt on my 12x12's and sometimes 10pt. Love Jen's idea of 25% genius!

usually I go between 10 and 12 also. A lot depends on your font too, they can be very differently sized...

If it's a handwriting font I usually try to go bigger, as those are the most difficult to read. I found out the hard way too, that reducing your page size from 12x12 to 8x8 makes reading any font smaller than 12 pt quite a challenge!

Sometimes a big font is a nice space filler, so I like to play around with font sizes, even mixing it up within a paragraph if trying to emphasize one phrase. Fonts are powerful.

I print my 12 x 12 LO's in 8 x 8. I generally use size 14 font for my journaling.

Thanks for all the great info. I was debating if I wanted to eventually make an 8x8 book of my P365. If I do, I might just increase the font to 14.

You can always print a practice section to test a new font

Oh I am so glad I popped into this thread! I had been so worried about not having my font appear too big, I had been keeping it 12 most of the time. BUT, I forgot that I do the page in 12 x 12, but I will most likely print in 8 x 8 ... guess I better make sure to check that before it's book-time! Thanks ladies!

Yes, this is a very helpful thread! My first few books look like large-print kid's books. I showed a friend yesterday who was getting a crash-course in Elements how the font sizes differ and you have to think about them ahead of time. She actually like the ginormous font. To each her own! I did print an 8X8 for Bailey where the print is too small to read. I did it in 10pt in 12X12 then printed in 8X8. Oops.

Also, of course, it makes a huge difference what the font is. Arial is probably more readable at every size than Poor Richard, say, would be.

My daughter who does freelance writing, editing and layout for a newspaper and a couple of magazines says that fonts as small as 8 are easily legible. You probably wouldn't want to go that small as a general rule, but if you are labeling a photo or writing an a small tag it's okay to go that small. Of course, you wouldn't want it that size if you plan to reduce a 12 X 12 to an 8 X 8.
