Default Renaming a folder in Snow Leopard?

I have a new iMac with Snow Leopard. I just switched from a PC and an so used to the old that I'm struggling to learn all of the differences between the old and the new.

One thing that I cannot easily do is to rename a folder. This morning I tried to add one word to the folder name. I most of the time can do this by just sort of clicking and clicking the name with my cursor. Most of the time that click will open the folder (which I do not want to do) . . . sometimes I get lucky and I will actually be able to rename the folder. I read to click F2 to rename . . . that doesn't seem to help much.

Any ideas? On my old computer I would just right click and an option to rename would come up . . . easy peasy!

How I do it is to click on the name--not the blue folder itself, just the word or words underneath--which highlights the folder, then click the words again, giving me the word highlighted and ready to be typed over. Another way is to single click the folder and hit CMD-I; this brings up the Info box, and you can type into the name field there. It's a few more steps, but it can be tricky to get the hang of exactly where to click the words under the folder icon!

Mollie, if you change to the column mode in the display (The third box in that row at the top of a finder window) to Column, it is easier to click on the file name. And like Laura said it is crucial to click on the letters of the name...that gives you renaming ability....clinking on the blue out side the letters gives you open...I know your Mac MAn is very specific about his sensitivities but maybe this is how he turns into she!! HA!

renaming is easy - you click on the name you want to change and hit return, it turns into a blue box you can type over. ta-da
I'm not going to mention I learnt this in that book I told you to buy!! LOL

Thanks Patricia and Laura & Mel. . . You all are a great help!!! I can now change folder names ... with ease.

I found that I cannot change the folder name on my Lacie external . . . the My Book external I can change.

And, Mel (blush ) I bought the book that you recommended and didn't look for the answer there! The return key thingie is easy!
This was my QOTD (question of the day) for my new imac . . . you guys are the greatest. Just tell me when I am changing from mildly annoying to very annoying!

Keep asking questions, Mollie! I learn something new about my Mac every time you do!

Admit it now, isn't your new Mac just about the prettiest thing you've ever seen?

"HE" is quiet handsome . . . and he flaunts it!!

He loves to correct my spelling and I do love him for that. He is fast . . . should I love that too? I never wanted to date fast men before. What do you think Merr?

Oh, I am glad you ask questions-- I did not know about hitting return to change a file name! I always did a 'get info' and did it the hard way. This is so much easier, I can't believe it! I have my Macs two years now.

Wozers, I have been clicking and clicking trying to rename a folder. I should have known my Pretty Martini was smarter than that!!!
I just clicked and returned every folder on my desktop because it was so much fun!
